I have never gotten over the firm idea that only a man wearing a tie with a suit or sport coat is dressed up, and without a tie they look disheveled and sloppy like when a party is getting loose and people ate and drank and now men take off their ties and look like relaxed, tired slobs.
I just can’t shake that image from the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Doubt I’ll ever get modern.
Agree, however i wear them more often theae days, especially if i am trying to get the most attention or convey authority...my colleagues will been in slacks and a jacket, i go dark suit and tie and the execs pay attwntion to me and not them
So the modern equivalent of an exotic Jack Kerouac beatnik or James Dean type guy of the fifties appearing forbidden and exciting to women would be a guy in the corner of a party with 4 or 5 young women around him as they see he dared to carry a handful of plastic straws and is wearing a tie. The girls can’t take their eyes off him.
Of course they shouldn’t dictate no one can wear them if they want, but doing away with the requirement is fine by me. They belong with powdered wigs and frilled ruffs and hose for men. Pretty ridiculous when you think about it.
Freegards
I forgot which cult, but there was one that forbid neckties because Jesus didn’t wear one.
I wonder when they will decide on what other types of employee dress code requirements will be dictated by the city? Wonder if there are any Hooter-type establishments around? Or, even fast food places?
I do agree with other posters who state that much of the time, when casual dress is encouraged, professionalism does appear to decline. The one exception I encountered was in a call center. But, there were still limitations there. No shorts, flip flops (except I got a dr excuse when I sliced my foot open), tank tops etc. We were able to be comfortable (important in that environment). And, when we had visitors scheduled, then we had to wear business casual.
Lancaster California is a sh!thole city; was full of aerospace workers and assholes 40 years ago, but now it is just wetbacks and black and brown gangbangers.
Always wanted to be the big city of the Antelope Valley, just couldn’t make the grade.
Your NOT supposed to tie a Windsor Knot THAT tight; YOU IDIOT.
I think dressing down makes some job environments less professional. I also equate the lack of neck tie to totalitarian regimes including the Kenyan administration. There is the proper place for ties and our politicians/ our servants should wear them in official capacity. All that being said, I bet there are countless other issues that need to be worked on and neck ties is not one of them.
CONGRATULATIONS, your still CIVILIZED.
The work uniform is fast disappearing. Most men will regret it when it’s gone. We’ll have to start paying attention to clothes again. As it is, a tie is ample outlet for creative expression in men’s wardrobes.
Most people are obese and men try to fit into shirt sizes they wore in college. So having a fat neck being strangled by a too small shirt collar is going to be annoying.
And since most clothes are designed for skinny gay boys, finding clothes appropriate for a tie is rare.
A well tailored suit or sport coat with a tie looks super sharp. I actually wish I had more opportunities to wear one.
He must have run aPinnacle Peak restaurant where they cut off your tie when you come in.
He probably didn't wear deodorant, either. And it got hot over there.
I’m all for it if it’s voluntarily. I see ties and very dated and worn out.
It’s like a ribbon on some gift or package. I see them as uniform like, with all the males wearing the same thing for a hundred+ years. I’d guess it’s time to dump that civilian uniform.
And it serves zero purpose! Except if someone uses it grab hold of to choke you off or drag you around the street with it.
I used to hate wearing them. I like wearing them now.
Have you looked at the lunatic nut jobs in DC?
Smart move. A lot of people don’t realize that dressing well demonstrates respect for others — bosses, customers, and yourself. Those who don’t send the opposite message.
LOL, you wear a suit at my workplace and the first thing everybody thinks is that the person must have an interview that day.
