President Trump on Tuesday pardoned a pair of Oregon ranchers whose arson conviction became a focus for opponents of federal government land ownership.
Dwight Hammond, 76, and his son Steven, 49, were convicted in 2012 and sent to prison on arson charges. They had set a series of fires on their ranch that spread to federal land.
The Hammonds case became the inspiration for the 40-day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. The organizers wanted to protest federal land ownership.
The Hammonds distanced themselves from the occupiers and didn't endorse the action.
In a statement Tuesday announcing the pardon, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emphasized uncertainties in the case and the prison terms and fines the Hammonds had already completed.
The evidence at trial regarding the Hammonds responsibility for the fire was conflicting, and the jury acquitted them on most of the charges, the White House said.
The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West. Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency.
Every day a Tactical Nuke is fired into Leftist Commieland.
“That is pretty far from the case. Royalist sympathizers abounded in the colonies.”
From Wikipedia:
“Historians have estimated that between 15 and 20 percent of the two million whites in the colonies in 1775 were Loyalists (300,000-400,000).”
Reading further, the article states that about 20,000 of them left the continent for other British possessions or Britain itself, after the Declaration of Independence was signed.
It would be a wonderful thing for President Trump to have only 20% of the people in this country opposed to him, rather than just under half. I would say that Washington had a good deal if 80% of the Colonists supported the forming of the country, or at least didn’t oppose it. Just wished those here today opposed to our form of government would all leave our shores.
Justice at last.
What’s actually funny about all this is the way liberals will scream and wail...Gnash their teeth as they exclaim “But you can’t do this!!! WE are in charge!!!! You can’t do this to us!!!!”
Wow. These are the kinds of stories I love seeing. It’s the quiet acts of our President, the ones that receive little fanfare or attention, that signal the extent to which MAGA is in progress.
Excellent news to wake up to today.
Thank you President Trump.
Back then, it wasn’t a dirty word yet. His successors made it so.
I believe that Rip van Sessions has publicly praised the work of the local US prosecutors office.
True. Bad people hijacked it.
They are still here. Today they are known as Democratics. Or rather Democratic-Socialists. Lol
I agree. Thank you President Trump.
I would give money for a monument of some kind of Mr. Finnicum.
I am sure there will be a Finnicum Monument one day.
Outstanding action by President Trump! This IS JUSTICE in action!
@realDonaldTrump @POTUS
We’re the real progressives. Trump is a real progressive. But they stole the word “progressive” and we can’t get it back, any more than we can go back to using the color blue. Common usage just won’t change so abruptly. One day, though, we’ll regain the stolen words and colors. Once they are universally recognized as the real deplorables, and are tarred and feathered like the Duke and the King for doing the Royal Non-such scam one too many times. As they finally get rid out of town on a rail, we’ll celebrate in shades of blue.
Actually those were later side deals. The originating motivation has always been Agenda 21 and water rights. The Hammonds ranch is in the way of the Yukon to Yellowstone wildlife corridor and Las Vegas developers want Bundy’s water.
Well said.
Current PROGRESSIVES = REPRESSIVES
