That is an obvious and simple cleavage point between Leftists and Conservatives.
To Conservatives, it is a God-given right and delineated as such in our Constitution.
To the Leftists, to whom government is God, it is the job of the government to defend you.
Thankfully, leftists were far fewer during the formative stages of this country. We would have been snuffed out in the cradle.
The political “left” did not exist during the formative years of the US. Neither did the political “right” as we understand those terms today. Those who believed in and fought for indvidual rights were the radicals of the time. Those who supported the monarchy (government) were the conservatives. But we can’t and shouldn’t apply our modern political constructs to the Revolutionary generation.
