so how did the court prove the man was capable of running away and not being chased down tackled and murdered?

For anyone living in Conn- if you are ever in this situation- tell the court you tried to run- but they caught you and surrounded you and cut off your escape- Tell the court you KNEW that you had absolutely zero chance of escaping-

When attacked by 3, you cannot retreat. The law is invalid, and the judge incompetent. The kid must go free.

The article simply says "was convicted of" ...

If this was a jury trial and I had been on the jury, I would have voted "Not Guilty".

The law is an ass ...

Pardon me? Van Jones, please call your office. President Trump wants to talk to you about a criminal injustice matter. Wants to support an appeal to the US Supreme Court. Has a hunch a conservative majority would overturn the @#$%! conviction of a certain upstanding young African American man, with no priors, in a heartbeat. Can you help?

Seems like this is a case that may qualify for a POTUS pardon.

“By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida...”

If 27 states have “stand your ground,” then why is Florida notable?

Use of deadly force laws have nothing to do with common sense. Also, self defense justification often stops the moment the thug doing the assault is no longer a threat to your life. Similarly in a fight, depending on local laws you may not be able to use a self defense justification if you escalate things by being the first to use a “deadly force weapon.”

The moral of the story is that any time you use deadly force, know local laws and be certain you are willing to go to jail to protect and preserve your life or that of someone you love. There is nothing “just” about our “justice system.”

If he has any brains, he will move out of that disgusting state. If an man is not permitted to defend himself, he’s a slave, not a man.

"Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida — have passed so-called “stand-your-ground” laws, which entitle citizens to use force in self-defense if there is a reasonable belief of a threat."

A journalist came sooo close to actually writing something accurate. It was almost there and they bailed on the last phrase.

All self-defense requires a reasonable belief of a threat. That's not what is different about "stand your ground".

It should have read as:

"Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida — have passed so-called “stand-your-ground” laws, which do not impose a duty to retreat."

If he shown his back to these guys they could have killed him.

It isn’t natural for any living creature to do nothing to prevent their own death.
