Seems like this is a case that may qualify for a POTUS pardon.

What a dumbass legislative body that drafted and passed this law that gave the judge no discretion in the case. Connecticut is another failed state to stay away from. Voting for dumbasses has consequences.

“By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida...”

If 27 states have “stand your ground,” then why is Florida notable?

Wherever the commiecrats rule, the people are destitute and in poverty. What an amazing coincidence.

Use of deadly force laws have nothing to do with common sense. Also, self defense justification often stops the moment the thug doing the assault is no longer a threat to your life. Similarly in a fight, depending on local laws you may not be able to use a self defense justification if you escalate things by being the first to use a “deadly force weapon.”

The moral of the story is that any time you use deadly force, know local laws and be certain you are willing to go to jail to protect and preserve your life or that of someone you love. There is nothing “just” about our “justice system.”

I do believe that somebody has actually done this. IIRC, several years back, there was a video of such a device that actually worked well.

If he has any brains, he will move out of that disgusting state. If an man is not permitted to defend himself, he’s a slave, not a man.

"Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida — have passed so-called “stand-your-ground” laws, which entitle citizens to use force in self-defense if there is a reasonable belief of a threat."

A journalist came sooo close to actually writing something accurate. It was almost there and they bailed on the last phrase.

All self-defense requires a reasonable belief of a threat. That's not what is different about "stand your ground".

It should have read as:

"Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida — have passed so-called “stand-your-ground” laws, which do not impose a duty to retreat."

"I guess he was supposed to wait for them to go get the shotgun......."

Before assaulting them? Yes, he was. The imminent threat had passed.

If he shown his back to these guys they could have killed him.

It isn’t natural for any living creature to do nothing to prevent their own death.

” Louisville / Jefferson County is NOT a politically conservative area.”

I’ve been looking into that area, the area of Indiana just across the river and Lexington.

I thought it was “conservative enough” out there in Louisville. Was I wrong ?

"This is crazy! Was he supposed to let them maim or kill him?"

It isn't actually. He was entitled to defend himself from the attack. Retreating appears to not have been the issue. Looks like typical self-defense reporting getting things wrong.

The attack was over. The thugs left the building. He went after them and stabbed one. That's not self-defense in any state.

I live further out in the country, but spend plenty of time in Louisville regularly, my daughter lives there. I like Louisville a lot more than Lexington. They are surprisingly different. Louisville has much more to offer IMO.

Both cities are run by corrupt libtards. You won’t find any city that size which isn’t - sadly that is par for the course. But as cities go, I do like Louisville. I like it better than any other city of that size I have spent time in.

I don’t know anything about quality of life as a resident on the other side of the river. I would not recommend doing a daily commute over the bridges. I would live on the side I worked.

On any of these do your due diligence and learn where the crime is.

It sounds like they assaulted him, left, he chased them outside, and stabbed one. Even under Stand Your Ground, he would have been in trouble.

It sounds like a gang issue, in which the Sumpter knew the attackers, and one poster adds,

the Stamford court was very lenient to this young man. If you check the State of Connecticut criminal website you will find that this lad was arrested in Stamford for carrying a dangerous weapon in May of 2015...he then declined the court's invitation to join them and caught a failure to appear. Then while on the run he caught an assault and carrying a dangerous weapon in Bridgeport and was sentenced to probation. He was then arrested for the assault and carrying a dangerous weapon in Norwalk. On the violation in Bridgeport he caught 20 months in jail...In Stamford he got five years after 18 months concurrent to Bridgeport so the lawyers and judge did him well with 18 months concurrent to the 20 months in Bridgeport...NO extra jail time at all. Then, I suspect, he was given probation with a condition of NO KNIVES. Further reading would indicate that in his situation he not only had a duty to retreat in safety... but not to pursue with a knife. If I'm incorrect with this analysis just reply...but it seems to me that the district attorney and lawyer cut this young lad a real break in Stamford - https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/policereports/articleComments/Victim-of-Norwalk-assault-gets-18-months-for-not-13044078.php#

Blawie said he hoped this would be Sumpter’s last “bid,” slang for prison sentence, because now that he has been convicted of felony first-degree assault, he will be treated more harshly by the criminal justice system going forward. - https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/policereports/article/Victim-of-Norwalk-assault-gets-18-months-for-not-13044078.php

Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers.

That is some bullshit right there.

Retreat from three attackers?

One day someone may decide enough is enough and retreat all over a judge.
