People are stupid. Why any shoots a round into the unknown is foolishness beyond belief

A bullet fired at anything other than a known target

All was quiet in Los Angeles as yahoos coward in fear of mayor garcetti’s warning not to set-off fireworks.

Oh, he’s so commanding! Even as the city is overrun with bums, his political benevolence is as screwed-up as his rationality.

“check your physics - a bullet fired vertically would be travelling very close to its muzzle velocity when it gets back down.”

Nope, vertically has been tested a zillion times. It’s barely at the “penetrate the skin” thresh hold.

About 300fps for a 30 caliber rifle bullet, and about 200fps for a 9mm handgun bullet.

Heavier bullets fall faster vertically, in general.

Off of vertical is a whole different ball game, of course.

My mom was about ten feet from a guy who caught a bullet fired from almost a mile away during a 4th fireworks show years ago.

He died.

They caught the idiot. He did 13 years for manslaughter as I recall.

A bullet dropped from a helicopter tumbles, limiting its terminal velocity.

A bullet fired upwards retains its spin stabilization on the fall down, so it comes down considerably faster.

Fr. Frog knows all about the topic and explains it well. see link in #17.

1970’s, Des Plaines Illinois, a jamoke firing a handgun near vertical into the air, the projectile fatally strikes a young girl about one block away.

You assume straight up and down. I had a friend hit in the leg before, he bled too. Celebratory fire is mostly a Hispanic thing.

I remember when “celebratory gunfire” was a phenomenon exclusive to the shittiest shitholes in the middle east.

All I know is that, about 10 years ago, I was in a meeting in our smallish urban southern city, when we heard a bang outside.

Didn’t think too much about it, until later, when I looked at the front bumper of my Saturn. There was a 9mm round in it! Came almost straight down, nicked the chrome in the front grill and embedded in the top of the bumper, (heavy plastic).

It’s still sitting there too. I haven’t touched it, mainly because it fills the hole and keeps water out.

It wouldn’t penetrate deep, but, it might make you bleed.

The bullet came down with that much inertia ?

Are they SURE that’s what happened ? I mean, really?

Back in the early '90s, my cousin got his scalp split open by a falling bullet on New Year's Day, just after the midnight fireworks bloomed. We knew about where the shot originated - there was a cluster of Section 8 apartments around 3/4ths of a mile away. He bled pretty bad - ended up at the local ER for some stitches. In terms of how hard it hit him, he said it felt like someone snuck up behind him and whacked his head with a bat. It may not have had enough energy to put a hole in his skull, but he could've easily lost an eye.

One other thing - celebratory gunfire results in more roof leaks than bullet wounds, so if a bullet can punch through fiberglass shingle and roofing paper, it's far from harmless.

I was in Iraq when the national soccer team made won a World Cup match. Eight pole died from the the celebratory weapon fire that day in Baghdad. Never underestimate the brain power of Man. There are many that believe that such accidental deaths are at the will of God/Allah.

Do you remember some of these:
Always Dress Like A Lady(my favorite)
shittiest shitholes
Wiretapped

He speaks my language!
