Since Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement last week, Democrats have argued President Trump should wait until after the 2018 midterm elections to nominate his replacement. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been leading this charge.
If GOP were consistent, they would wait to consider Justice Kennedys successor until after the midterm elections. Time & again Ldr McConnell claimed the American ppl should have a voice in deciding the next SCOTUS Justice. That was in Feb of an election year. Its almost July.
But according to a new set of polls the majority of Americans want a new nominee confirmed as soon as possible, not months from now.
First, from NBC News/Survey Monkey :
More than six in 10 Americans, or 62 percent, said Trump's nominee, who will be announced on Monday, should be confirmed or rejected before the elections in which control of the House and Senate are at stake. About three in 10, or 33 percent, said the Senate should wait until after the elections, the poll found.
And from Rasmussen Reports :
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 51% of Likely U.S. Voters think the U.S. Senate should move as quickly as possible to confirm a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Forty percent (40%) disagree and say the confirmation should be put off until a new Senate takes office in January.
President Trump has been meeting with potential nominees all week and will make a final decision on July 9 about who will replace Justice Kennedy.
And Americans want an “originalist” SCOTUS
The battle lines have been drawn since November 2016. Even more reason for the Deplorables and the Trump base which is growing hourly and daily to get out the vote in November.
Amen, and that’s what they fear most.
The whole concept of “timing” the SCOTUS replacement either before or after this election or that election is just a naked effort to politicize the court. It’s not supposed to be politicized. So, don’t look at the calendar.
Justice Kennedy is stepping down? Get a list of name together, nominate someone, have the Senate vote. That’s just the way it works. That’s exactly what Trump is doing.
Schumer is way out of line.
If you make this an election solely on the court choice...you might charge up the red states enough that you’d gain four more GOP senators....so waiting might not be that wise. I’d knock this out early on and hope that no more of them announce some retirement in August.
"The only liberty that is valuable is a liberty connected with order; that not only exists along with order and virtue, but which cannot exist at all without them. It inheres in good and steady government, as in its substance and vital principle. Edmund BurkeRussell Kirk, in his elegant writings, cited that description of the American experiment in liberty, an unheard-of concept among citizens in most nations of the world.
They already are losing this battle.
Having the seat still vacant in Nov would actually be bad for Chuckie’s vulnerable incumbents.
So they should have voted on Garland?
Any descendants of Judge Roy Bean available?

Here’s the problem: Trump is the long-overdue “disruptor” of the ossified Washington, DC political culture just like what Steve Jobs did for the computing industry and Jeff Bezos did for the retailing industry.
“President Trump has been meeting with potential nominees all week and will make a final decision on July 9 about who will replace Justice Kennedy.”
Trump should publicly meet with Alex Jones, just to have some fun with the Left.

Gee he doesn’t look anything like Paul Newman.
Schumer really screwed it up.
I would like to see him carry a copy of The Red Cliffs of Zerhoun onto Air Force One, with enough cover showing to be noticed...
My honest opinion is yes. It used to be a slam dunk — the guy who is president gets to choose someone for the Supreme Court. The Senate approves it. Unless there are serious ethical issues — then the Senate blocks.
It pretty much worked that way until the Democrats opposed Robert Bork. After that, it became a regular game that each political party tries to block the other party’s choices. The Democrats play that game far more than the Republicans, both — as with Garland — other sides make this a political shoving match.
I don’t think it is meant to be that way.
