A Study Of Half A Million Found More Evidence That Drinking Coffee Is Associated With A Longer Life

Feel free to pour yourself a cup of coffee before reading this — even if you've already had some today.

Yet another study has found that drinking coffee is associated with a longer life and lower risk of an early death. This adds to a significant body of research indicating that coffee has positive effects on the heart, liver, brain, and more.

The latest study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, reveals that people who drink more coffee have a lower risk of death even if they drink eight or more cups per day, and even if their genetics make them slow to process caffeine.

The study looked at 500,000 people in the UK, of whom 387,494 were coffee drinkers. The results suggested that people who drank two to five cups of coffee in a day were about 12% less likely to die than non-coffee-drinkers over the 10-year time period in the study. People who drank six to seven cups were 16% less likely to die, and people who drank eight or more cups were about 14% less likely to die.

It didn't matter whether the coffee was decaf or regular, ground or instant — all were beneficial (though the connection to lower risk of death was weaker for instant coffee).

Up to eight cups a day — or more

This recent study drew from data from the UK Biobank study, an in-depth research initiative collecting data and following 500,000 people for three decades. The group studied was 54% female and had an average age of 57. Ten years after the start of the study, 14,225 people had died. Among at least the generally healthy individuals from the UK enrolled in this study, coffee drinkers seem to gain health benefits from the habit.

I’d just as soon take a 200mg caffiene pill, instead of having to drink a whole cup of hot, harsh liquid. If I drink anything hot, I’d prefer it be soup. I like the aroma of coffee, but get bored with the sipping. Many folks feel the exact opposite way.

“Many folks feel the exact opposite way”

That would be me. Besides the taste of coffee, which I love, the “ritual” of coffee is soothing and comforting to me.

Caffeine pills? Hmmm... will have to check in to those. Might be smarter on long road trips than constantly sipping coffee — if you get my drift.

The caffeine is not what makes the coffee beneficial (though that’s why a lot of people drink it, including me on many occasions - to wake up). The benefits come from the polyphenols in the coffee bean itself, and other anti-oxidants.

“coffee is associated with a longer life”

Oh God! I drink copious amounts of coffee. Hopefully the cigarettes will remedy that.

Unlike many adults I've never been a caffeine kind of guy.No coffee,no tea,no sodas. In fact I don't like the taste of coffee or tea.But if it's appearing in major medical journals I might have to rethink my attitude.

My body obviously wants to live for a long time since whenever I cut back on my huge daily intake of coffee my body punishes me with caffeine withdrawal headaches.

"Correlation does not equal causation."

That's true, and if it were an isolated study we should be very skeptical. But it's not.

Sometimes we observe correlations long before we know the causes, and correlations do stem from the obvious causes. It could be that coffee drinkers are just generally more healthy people, but that doesn't sound likely.

There have already been demonstrated many specific causal benefits from coffee, and numerous studies correlating coffee with health benefits. So this is not isolated, and there's not only correlations at work.

I haven't read the piece but I wonder if it's believed that the caffeine is the beneficial component or is it something else.It seems possible that it's something other than the caffeine.

Interesting! About a year ago as I was headed toward my doctor's office at one of Boston's large hospitals I saw a desk asking people to sign up for a "biobank" being set up by Harvard Medical School.I signed up...they asked me many medical questions, asked me to sign several forms and then took several tubes of blood.

So maybe I'm playing some small role in advancing medical science.

Mom is 94 and always is sipping on coffee, even just before bed. Her mind is scary clear as a bell.

What was it, a month ago, where the Kalifornia morons passed a law saying coffee shops had to post a warning about the health ‘dangers’ associated with drinking coffee?

Glad I left 50 years ago.
