Many countries consider a word representating a group as plural. I hear it on foreign sports announcing a lot. It is very awkward to my ear and incorrect in USA standard English. They would say The team are... .

Is "Russia" a plural? What's the singular? Russius? That's British English. If something comprises a collection of things, even if the word itself is singular, it's treated as a plural. Which, to an American, is singular.
