There are plenty of Muslims who vote Conservative. The present Home Secretary (Teresa May’s formwe job) is a Muslim (one of 13 among the 600 Westminster MPs). Khan got elected not because he’s a Muslim but because he was the Labour candidate, and his Tory opponent fought a lousy campaign.
The Muslim population of London is 12% (5% in the country as a whole). Even if the entire UK Muslim population lived in London, they still wouldn’t be a majority. Khan got elected because he was the Labour candidate, not because he’s a Muslim.
Not only is the Lord Mayor of London a purely ceremonial (and incidentally very ancient) position, but it’s also confined to the City of London - the small area centred on St Paul’s and the Tower of London, which was the original medieval city and is now the financial district. The Greater London Assembly, which Khan heads, covers the 33 Boroughs of the modern metropolis, of which the City of London is only one.
Incidentally also, perhaps worth pointing out that the powers even of the elected Mayor of London (Khan’s post) are much more limited than the powers of mayor of a large US city (even though these mayoral posts, only introduced in a few cities as recently as 1997, were in part modelled on the American example). For this reason American commentators tend to attribute rather more significance to Khan than he actually has.
Well, if you go to Twitter, you’ll find many more Brits who are angry at Khan than Americans who disdain him.
And I think this: no mayor’s duties ever shrink, they only grow larger. And the 3 mayors you’ve had have been terrible.
I guess you’re taking the scotsman’s place these days, lol.
Then they need to counter-protest when Trump visits the UK next month.
Can’t argue with that...although Livingstone and Johnson did actually achieve some useful things in down-to-earth local issues like public transport and (in Johnson’s case) cycling.
Prince William BREAKS Royal tradition in Middle East PEACE bid after LIFE-CHANGING trip
He's gonna meddle!
Breaks with tradition....
SNORT.
Oh, as a city dweller, I hate that cycling thing which was an obsession of Bloomberg as well as Johnson. I think they have no place in a large city in which private cars (when allowed!), city buses, motorcyclists, taxis and trucks compete.
Did Khan ever get his girlie ads removed from the Tube?
Also, according to Twitter reports, he was heckled about Tommy Robinson while giving a speech the other day. I smiled at that.
Israelis: Hooboy. Here we go again. He’ll want us to give up yet more land.
Palestinians: Oh, boy! Here we go again. He’ll make them give it all up and commit suicide! And if he falls short of that, we’ll just keep on killing.
Prince William: There. I’ve given them fresh reason to hope. All it takes is the royal touch. Onward to some other speech.
Careful - as a lifelong cyclist born into a cycling family (my parents actually met on a CTC club run in the 1920s) I have rather strong views on the matter. But fear not, FR will be spared from hearing them...
That’s a relief!
Thank you, excellent clarification.
London didn’t even have mayors in 1946.
.
Similarly, they had virtually no Islamists then, either.
The march out of the Punjab was 2 years in the future then.
