Oklahoma conservatives’ views on medical marijuana evolving
Associated Press ^ | June 22nd, 2018 | By SEAN MURPHY

LINDSAY, Okla. (AP) — Danny Daniels, an evangelical Christian in the rural Oklahoma town of Lindsay, is reliably conservative on just about every political issue.

The 45-year-old church pastor is anti-abortion, voted for President Donald Trump and is a member of the National Rifle Association who owns an AR-15 rifle. He also came of age during the 1980s and believed in the anti-drug mantra that labeled marijuana as a dangerous gateway drug.

But his view on marijuana changed as his pastoral work extended into hospice care and he saw patients at the end of their lives benefiting from the use of cannabis.

“Some people said I couldn’t be a pastor and support medical marijuana, but I would say most of the people I know, including the Christians I pastor, are in favor of it,” said Daniels, pastor of Better Life Community Church in downtown Lindsay, a rural agricultural and energy industry town about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) south of Oklahoma City.

Daniels is among a growing group of traditionally conservative Republican voters in Oklahoma who have shifted their position on the topic. Their support for a medical marijuana measure on Tuesday’s ballot could ensure Oklahoma joins the growing list of states that have legalized some form of pot.

It’s the first medical marijuana state question on a ballot in 2018, and Oklahoma’s vote precedes elections on marijuana legalization later this year in Michigan and Utah. Michigan voters will decide whether to legalize recreational pot while Utah is considering medical marijuana.

Among the reddest states in the country, Oklahoma has for decades embraced a tough-on-crime philosophy that includes harsh penalties for drug crimes that has contributed to the state now leading the nation in the percentage of its population behind bars.

“This year Oklahoma and Utah will join the ranks of states permitting Medical Cannabis. “

For the ailing who would definitely benefit from cannabis, I sure hope this comes true!!!

“The medical use of dope is an absolute hoax. Totally worthless. “

As someone who learned 3 years ago 1st hand about the healing properties of cannabis, as a person who’s lost 94 lbs of flab, who ended 20+ years of depression, acute anxiety & insomnia by using cannabis beginning in 2015 & is still so incredibly thankful to Our Heavenly Father for this wonderful plant: You’re wrong.

I recall how upset I was when I discovered 1st hand that all the BS authoritarian prohibitionists regarding cannabis was all a LIE. It was upsetting to realize people I had looked up to, institutions I had previously admired were just out & out lying to the world about cannabis. But I swallowed my pride & looked into the history of cannabis & made it a point to educate myself.

I suggest all authoritarian prohibitionists take the time to personally interview people like me & our families so they can see where they’ve erred in hopes all that wasted energy preaching the fallacies of prohibition can be used for more constructive tasks, like saving our Republic from real enemies, foreign & domestic.

Nothing you ever say or do in your life will change the reality that for myself & millions more, cannabis is wonderful medicine. Have a blessed day. :)

The medical use of dope is an absolute hoax. Totally worthless. You would be better off chugging cheap whiskey. It never cured a single human. It is just dope. It is totally illegal . State laws are completely preempted.you risk prison time.

I'd offer to help you buy a clue but the expense would be too much for me to bear!

The only reason to synthesize THC is so Big Pharm can patent it. You can concentrate THC in an ordinary kitchen and ingest it.

The only reason to legalize pot is so the dopers can openly practice their habit, and society can take another step down the ladder. It's a gateway drug, period. We recently went to Colorado since pot was legalized. (I hadn't been in years.) The landscape is completely different. The legal pot has created an additional sub-culture of panhandlers and bums.

All these liberals are crying about the kids, but by legalizing pot they are just opening another door for poor minorities to end up failures and on the welfare rolls. Pot also promotes crime. My wife retired from the Texas juvenile system, and during the intake interviews, almost every offender reported they were high when they did the crime.

You smoked dope and lost 90 pounds. That is quite common and is the result of not eating much needed calorie .Many pot heads looks like the walking dead especially when they gateway to meth or coke or heroin.
Now depression and anxiety reqiuires counceling. They are a volunteered state of mind symptoms of systemic problems. A “ disease” actuallly floats around like a germ.
Finally, dope leads to passing out thus ending insomnia .hopefully you won’t be drivin.
I want you to consider training for the mile run under 11 minutes and every other day at a commercial gym as far more effective and much cheaper.
God Bless you too and remember” God helps those who help themselves”.

“You smoked dope and lost 90 pounds. “

Fallacy. I do not “smoke dope” I use legal medicine here in the state of Florida & smoking cannabis is not yet permitted by law. Also, if I were legally allowed to smoke cannabis I would not do so because it tastes horrible to me & I hate the harshness of the hot smoke on my throat. I vape cannabis concentrates & ingest edibles. Please, come out of the dark ages. You don’t have to smoke cannabis to use it anymore.

“That is quite common and is the result of not eating much needed calorie .”

For some, perhaps. In my case, because I had more energy due to the total absence of depression symptoms I have the energy & the desire to walk 3-5 miles every day of my life (walked 3 before Mass this morning as usual) which has nothing to do with ‘not eating’. A lovely false ASSumption, born of arrogance I expect. When you get a chance, look up the word “homeostasis”.

I would also suggest dumping your progressive tactics of ASSuming you know me, how I use cannabis & how it affects me when you’ve never met me to have such knowledge.

“Now depression and anxiety reqiuires counceling.”

According to who? You? By what authority, degree, license or certification do you make such an authoritarian declaration?

“They are a volunteered state of mind symptoms of systemic problems. A “ disease” actuallly floats around like a germ.”

Wow, what an ignorant assertion. Sorry you have no knowledge or understanding of the many physiological reasons for depression. It would make you appear less foolish if you took the time to educate yourself on the matter. You can start here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-integrationist/201310/depression-wont-go-away-folate-could-be-the-answer

See, I had a DNA test a few years ago to see what medicines might best treat my depression because nothing was working. We discovered my liver does not produce enough folate which is what the brain uses to make serotonin to regulate our moods. No amount of counseling in life will ever correct that. No medication will correct it either & you can’t fix it by ingesting folate unfortunately.

It’s a good day when you learn something new, isn’t it? :)

“Finally, dope leads to passing out thus ending insomnia.”

More fallacy & ignorance. Poor creature.

“.hopefully you won’t be drivin.”

I didn’t drive when I was under the influence of numerous medicines over the years & feel no urge to start now.

“God Bless you too and remember” God helps those who help themselves”.”

Thanks. God Bless you & yours always. He surely does, help us. He’s given me an amazing blessing by pointing me in the direction of cannabis & I will do my very best to offer a daily prayer of Thanksgiving.

I didn’t think so——and wondered why it was mentioned.

My granddaughter ran the entire Boston and London marathons at a better pace, but I am a non-athlete so I was confused.

Happy to do so. Hope you find the info there helpful.

There is a treatment available that’s mentioned in the link. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. SMH.

It didn’t make sense to me either.

I prefer walking vs running/jogging. I’m usually walking at a 16 minute 30 second mile most of the time & on a day when I warm up properly I manage to do a 3 mile walk in 48-50 minutes. Monday thru Friday I walk 5 miles every day before 9am. Gotta get the miles in early here in the summer unless you want to bake in the extreme heat later in the day.

I was doing 40 mile weeks earlier this year but my knees started complaining & I cut back to 20-25 miles a week. Since I medicate before these walks most days I seldom experience any discomfort & I enjoy starting most every day walking the 1st mile with my wife. Tis’ a wonderful feeling & a great way to start the day.

Good for you-—I was a 3 mile a day walker for many years-—never in less than an hour, though.

There was no better way to ease stress or depression.

Now I’m so old I walk MUCH less——have to be within easy reach of a restroom. :-)

“There was no better way to ease stress or depression.”

I wish it had worked that way for me. Prior to using cannabis walking just bored me or was a chance to obsess over some perceived negativity that may or may not have been real.

Now it’s truly a joy & so very healthy.

Enjoy all the walks you take & may there always be a toilet that’s close enough at all times. :)

It helps me as well, but I use a treadmill. No matter how far I walk, I’m always close to a restroom. :) I’ve done 2 miles a day for the past 17 days. My goal was to do 2 miles a day, six days a week, but I hate taking a day off now.

“My goal was to do 2 miles a day, six days a week, but I hate taking a day off now.”

-

Then don’t take a day off-——consider the 7th day a “bank” for days that life intervenes and you can’t do the two miles.
