This is the best known version of the song, recorded in 1959 in a 2/2 slow dance tempo; Tony Williams handles lead vocal duties. This is a clip from 1973's “American Graffiti,” the film that put George Lucas on the map. I know people who broke into tears at the Ron Howard & Cindy Williams dance scene.

Could anyone really hate this song? Judy absolutely detested it. When she had her TV show in the early Sixties, she showed off her comic abilities by making fun of the whole idea with her own wacky sense of humor. This is hysterically funny.

Jerome Kern worked up as reggae? The Platters’ 2/2 treatment spawned this little number from 1972. A song has to be really great to survive this treatment.

On occasion, Steven Spielberg would use his prodigious talents on lesser films, some of which will be answers to trivia questions for future generations. “Always” from 1989 was something of a throwaway film, and this version, based on the Platters, comes from the movie, which featured Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter and John Goodman.
