“she” repeatedly looked down at her phone

Have you seen a picture of this guy? Google Rafaela Vasquez. You have to be mentally ill to call him “she”.

“Vasquez looked up just 0.5 seconds before the crash, after keeping her head down for 5.3 seconds, the police report said.”

Is there a videocam on the driver in that Uber self-driving car ?

Why did this take so long to come out?! That adds to the need to charge the company and driver with murder.

As I recall she was riding a bicycle and she wasn’t homeless!

I want more self driving cars, fewer idiots.

I completely understand your sentiment but suspect that the “fewer idiots” stage comes long after self driving cars become obsolete.

They are not self driving. The driver has to be ready to control the car. That’s not self driving.
What’s the sense?

Yes, it was on an AZ news website. I watched the video and wondered why no one made the obvious conclusion that the “driver” was watching her phone while driving.

People can't drive at 80 mph on a busy freeway without texting. What makes us think that anything will make them give up entertainment while driving?

Of course you are right, but this self driving car was being beta tested. It was being tested on the “real” highway, but it was not ready for self drive without monitoring. So the company hired an incompetent to do the monitoring and made not watching TV while working a rule. So now she can be fired but this is not how software should be developed.

The monitoring should be by a competent person associated with the programming team. In my work, we would have an engineer in the car doing the monitoring. I know in this case it was boring, but good employees are a requirement for safety in this case it was ignored.

Self-driving cars are going to become a reality.

But accidents will still happen, as they do for 100% of other technologies.

A person walking their bike across a 4 lane road in front of a car is THEIR FAULT. It looks like suicide, actually.

And automatic car will eventually be BETTER then a person, but we are not there yet. That takes years of engineering and testing.

So we are justified in killing her?

No, just hitting her. The decision to die or not should be her responsibility.

Is the “Death Race 2000” scoring algorithm to be coded into the self-driving cars as well?

Right. A self-driving car with a driver is about as pointless as it gets in today’s world of technology and the endless pursuit of efficiency.

I work professionally in the planning and design of transportation infrastructure, and I've been advising my clients for years to forget about the possibility of having self-driving cars in abundant numbers for decades, if at all.

There are so many flaws to the underlying concept of a "self-driving car" that they may never become a financially feasible alternative to a regular car.

...become a financially feasible alternative

But that won't keep angel investors from throwing gobs of money at it, which will keep companies practicing how to make it less objectionable.

Add in a politician and this thing could have an eternal lifespan, even if never needed.
