Arizonas Senate GOP primary is pushing Rep. Martha McSally (R) to the right on immigration as she juggles the hot-button issue with the pressure of battling hard-right primary opponents.
McSally, who has represented a Tucson-area swing seat since 2015, has cast herself as an immigration hawk, most notably by removing her co-sponsorship of a more moderate immigration bill last month.
It presents an opportunity for her to solidify her position on immigration with primary voters, a Republican political consultant in Arizona told The Hill. If she handles it well, its a very good opportunity. If she doesnt, it could be a real problem for her.
McSally, a former combat fighter pilot whos considered one of Republicans top recruits this cycle, had carved out a more moderate profile over the years, particularly on immigration.
In 2015, the congresswoman opposed defunding DACA. And McSally previously backed the Recognizing Americas Children Act, a GOP bill that would offer a path to citizenship for Dreamers, immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, the Democrats likely nominee in the Senate race, is the only member of her party who has co-sponsored the bill.
McSally has also kindled a closer relationship with President Trump. She said she wants to pursue the presidents signature promise to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Part of McSallys district lines up with the border.
Democrats have pounced, with some pejoratively referring to her as McShifty. They highlight these moves as helpful both as they hope to blunt her standing in the primary and as they try to define her ahead of a likely general election.

A solid Arizona republican in the McCain/Flake tradition.
Conservative Review Liberty Score: F, of course.
Is this a move by McSalley from McCainiac’s playbook—every sixth year when he would take a tough line on immigration, then do a 180 when back in the District of Corruption?
Don’t trust this cow.
Watch me in Arizona, not in DC.
Yes, Martha McSnake.
Yep. I don’t trust her at all.
Yep.
Truer words were never spoken.
I’m voting for Kelli Ward.
Republicans are idiots!
The Flake seat rightfully belongs to Dr. Kelli Ward. She is the one who had the guts and gumption to drive him into retirement by declaring intent to primary him.
But noooooooo! Once Ward had knocked Flake out, 5 others decided to bravely jump in like turkey-buzzards picking over a carcass. If these brave Sally-come-latelies had any couth at all, they’d fight over the mcbrain seat.
The upshot will be a circular firing squad that will cripple the (R) nominee for the general.
Me too!!!!!
I voted for Martha McSally for congress in the last three election cycles and strongly support her bid for the Senate.
For those on this thread, I do not know the poll match ups for Sinema/Ward and Sinema/Martha.
Does anyone?
McCain was always the biggest border hawk during the primary and promptly became the king of open borders once elected.
Im not a fan of McSally but her dem opponent is an openly bisexual dem who would fight President Trump at every turn
McSally is a fraud. Please wake up Arizona
Since Arpaio is running close to Ward for 2nd place, he is clearly the spoiler. Were he to throw his support to Ward, if his supporters agreed, she would handily win. But there doesn’t seem to be any advantage to supporting McSally, unless he stays in the race just to spite Ward.
He entered the race on Jan 9th, McSally entered on the 12th.
“McSally takes hard line on immigration in Arizona primary”
Which is exactly what McTraitor did in EVERY primary then stabbed us in the back a week after the election. Somebody is feeding Joe’s ego he needs to withdraw. Meanwhile it’s obvious the McCains and Ducey are waiting to get through the primary so Ducey can put the horrible Cindy in there.
So Flake and McTraitor are picking thier replacements, which is fine by the worthless Mitch.
The only ones who should be considered for McCains seat would be Ward or the other one who challenged him in 10’. He has more experience as a winner.
Another McCain - campaign as strong Conservative, govern as a “moderate”.
Wake up Arizona voters, falling in behind McSally is falling for another bait and switch player.
