“That is silly. The don’t need cover to make a donation. SPLC made a mistake, would not back off, thought better of that, and paid off rather than lose more money in court.”
No it isn’t. You really think they would have lost in court or got a settlement of this nature?
“’The Southern Poverty Law Center was wrong to include Maajid Nawaz and the Quilliam Foundation in our Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists. Since we published the Field Guide, we have taken the time to do more research and have consulted with human rights advocates we respect,’ SPLC president Richard Cohen said in a statement. ‘We’ve found that Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam have made valuable and important contributions to public discourse, including by promoting pluralism and condemning both anti-Muslim bigotry and Islamist extremism. Although we may have our differences with some of the positions that Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam have taken, they are most certainly not anti-Muslim extremists. We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to Mr. Nawaz, Quilliam, and our readers for the error, and we wish Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam all the best.’”
In other words, “we are going to pay because it turns out you actually mostly agree with our ideology.”
It has NOTHING to do with the merits of the case. It has everything to do with being ideologically aligned. SPLC is HAPPY to give them millions.
They would rather go on a murderous rampage than give money to FRC. They still list them as a hate group:
https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/family-research-council
And FRC did sue SPLC:
SPLC is a terrorism-promoting, radical-left hate group and organized criminal enterprise disguised as a legal and human rights organization.
It is full of perverse and wicked individuals who would make the world a far better place if they were no longer in it.
You are making it more complex than it is. SPLC screwed up, was stubborn and would not back off until they realized they were better off apologizing and paying.
It is full of perverse and wicked individuals who would make the world a far better place if they were no longer in it.
