Frankfurt am Main (AFP) - Audi chief executive Rupert Stadler was arrested Monday in connection with parent company Volkswagen's "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal, with prosecutors saying they feared he might try to suppress evidence.

The dramatic development comes a week after Munich prosecutors raided Stadler's home after charging him with fraud and falsifying documents that allowed diesel vehicles equipped with cheating software to be sold to European customers.

Four police officers detained the Audi boss at his home at between 6 and 7 am, a spokesman for Munich prosecutors told AFP, saying that the arrest was justified as he is suspected of "seeking to influence witnesses or other suspects".

Stadler has denied the accusations and has said he is ready to be interrogated from Wednesday, added the spokesman.

Wait, he was arrested and jailed because prosecutors were worried that he "might" do something wrong? Wow.

One of the most stupid things is to measure exhaust at idle. This stupid method INCREASED POLLUTION.

IF you really want to reduce pollution you measure pollutants per mile.

VW and Audi are on target but not politically correct.

A point of Note: The emissions from that Audi are still less than from my totally compliant Dodge Ram Truck. Back in the sixties engines were very dirty and the rules to clean them up made a lot of sense and were good. The rules have become so stringent today it has reached the point of insanity. Today in the Western World we breath the cleanest air in centuries.

In England people can be put on probation if the police think they might commit crimes. Welcome to fascist Europe.

Exactly, the rules are insane. A multi national car maker takes this huge risk by fudging Test results. Should not someone say well gee maybe the standards are nearly impossible to conform to?

Exactly. They did something technically correct, AND something which put the interests of their customers ahead of idiot regulators, and this makes them BAD guys?????? How many companies do you see that put their customers first, and protect them against runaway goobermint?? They should get a parade, not detained.

Obviously I understand the goober-drones being angry with them, but even normal people (those whose income supports the goobermint rather than the reverse) seem to view this as a bad thing. I don't get it.

Well actually, per ton-mile, so you get a real efficiency number rather than putting a thumb on the scales for smaller vehicles.

Hyperbole fatigue, most likely. The media has been pummeling VW/Audi to the point where the public now thinks that TDI engines cause global warming, earthquakes and the heartbreak of Psoriasis. Since most people have no idea what actually occurs inside an internal-combustion engine, they just take every word as uncontested and factual.

And then there's George Carlin's observation, which definitely rings true in many cases:

"... I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a shit about the planet. They don’t care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me."

I think these German auto-bosses are getting shafted.

They set a goal that can’t be met. These guys are getting hammered for finding creative ways to meet that goal.

How many US auto chiefs are under the microscope? How many Japanese?
