It was chaos until the would-be victim(s) brought order to the situation by legally protecting themselves. Too bad it had to end the way it did, but this was the only way that order could've been restored with the chaos having ensued without the targets having been adequately pre-warned.
If only the perpetrators could have been more "transparent", then maybe all of this could have been avoided. /sarc

If the “Good Guys” are smart, they’ll lawyer up immediately and say nothing other than “I feared for my life” or “they was gonna kill me”.
In New Jersey, and a number of other states, they’d be in custody right now. Self-defense is highly frowned upon here.
