End for Merkel? Power struggle with minister threatens to collapse coalition

German Chancellor Angela Merkel faced a tense showdown Thursday within her divided conservative camp over the flashpoint issue of immigration that could threaten her political future.

Merkel was confronted with an open rebellion by her hardline Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, long a fierce critic of her liberal stance on refugees who wants to toughen border controls.

After late-night talks between them failed to resolve the dispute, a parliamentary session Thursday was suspended to allow the rival camps — Merkel’s CDU and its traditional sister party from Bavaria, Seehofer’s CSU — to each huddle for strategy talks.

Seehofer has demanded, as part of a new “migration master plan”, that German border police be given the right to turn back all asylum-seekers without identity papers and those who are already registered elsewhere in the European Union. Merkel rejects the idea, fearing it would be seen in the EU as Germany going it alone and that it would hurt overburdened front-line Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Greece.

She has pledged to seek a negotiated response by the EU, which holds its next summit on June 28-29, instead of Germany taking “unilateral steps at the expense of third parties” in the bloc. But the CSU was adamant that Germany “can’t wait for another EU summit”, with its Bavarian state premier Markus Söder declaring that “we must think about the local population, not just the rest of Europe”. …

Saw a report that it would take a 2/3 vote to remove her, unless she resigned.
(Can’t confirm that myself.)

instead of Germany taking “unilateral steps at the expense of third parties”

well, Merkel had no problem taking unilateral steps to opening the door. The least she can do is send her navy, such as it is, to blockade the 'aid' ships engaged in human trafficking.

It is long past time that East German Communist Merkel be gone from office. Perhaps some rest time in an old Soviet gulag after her removal.

He needs to arrange to be photographed having a ‘secret’ meeting with one of the AfD leaders.

Her replacement is going to be even worse.

We never would have gotten Trump without Obama.

If America hadn't suffered 8 years under Obama, it would have been a continued rotation of Bushes, Clintons, Romneys, and other hereditary members of the ruling class and their vassals.

Germany isn’t America, they don’t have a great track record in picking leaders.

Google “US government” and you’ll get the basic legislative, judicial, and executive...separation of powers, elections every 4 years for president...etc. It’s fairly easy to understand.

Google “German government” and it’s a byzantine mix of how their government is supposed to go. Elections are sort of rotated to different regions, coalitions form, there is a Chancellor (apparently -nothing- can ruin that term for them) They actually have a president as well as the chancellor. This president is really almost a monarch, more than a chief executive. Etc etc.
The whole mess is by our design to prevent any mass movement from sweeping another Hitler into power. But the German people turned out to be hamstrung and helpless when someone brings in a few million savages and says they intend to bring in more.

The German government page is an exercise in futility to really gain a firm hold on how it works.

The Germans have given the world nearly every form of bad government known to man. They do a lot of things very well, but Government isn’t one of them.

Seems Germany has the same problem we have...

on one side of the illegal alien problem is the republican Party...

On the other side is the GOP...

That’s a hoot citing Italy and Greece. Italy has said NO NO NO to the Aquarius and Greece is paying its 2% of NATO fees while Germany hovers around 1%.

CSU needs to break from CDU. There is virtually no difference now between CDU and SPD and CSU is completely drowned out. CSU will do well as a national party on its own.

Of course, she's just trying to hold the Reich together.
