Norway Wants to Double US Marines and Deploy Them Closer to Russia

Norway will ask the United States to double the number of U.S. troops stationed in the country and deploy them nearer the border with Russia, the government said Tuesday.

The announcement came after nine nations along NATO's eastern flank called Friday for the alliance to bolster its presence in their region: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

Oslo said it wants to boost the troop numbers to 700 and station them further north at Setermoen, 420 kilometres (260 miles) from Russia.

The U.S. deployment agreement would also be extended from the current six-month renewable periods to five years.

"The defense of Norway depends on the support of our NATO allies, as is the case in most other NATO countries," said Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen in a statement.

"For this support to work in times of crises and war, we are totally dependent on joint training and exercises in times of peace," he added.

Good. Trump can use the request as a wedge to get Norway to increase its military budget in line with what NATO wants. Trump can make it a tit for tat reward for Norway stepping up to its NATO obligations. A win win.

Agree with that 100%.

They don’t have their own men to deploy?

While I am sure this is in the interests of Norway, a rich Scandinavian nation, I don’t believe anyone here can make a cogent case for how it is in the interests of the US.

Denmark used to have the best marines in the world. They were called Vikings.

And they got paid well! (Everything they could fit in a Long Boat).

Trump should keep every military-aid request in the headlines. (Because I SO fear the election of a President Winfrey!)

Norway is basically a welfare state. My wife has family there who have become quite wealthy from servicing the needs of migrants. All on the Norwegian government dime. They have homes in other countries and will eventually relocate because the Norwegian society has changed so much demographically. We may go there in November to attend a wedding so it will be interesting to see how things are.

“We need to pull our troops out of Europe. The place has all the money it needs to defend itself.”

Right answer.

Complete withdraw.

Remember how the people of Norway trashed Trump when he remarked that he’d like more immigrants from there? They said they wouldn’t come to the U.S. and that Norway is better. If that’s how they feel, then they certainly don’t need U.S. Marines.

Norway is a greater risk from the Islamic Invasion.

The Russians may in part be behind that as well, as a means of destabilizing various regions of the world, making it easier, and "justifiable", for them to move in and take over. Putin's dream is to basically restore the evil empire that was the Soviet Union. And he, and they, don't care one wit of what it takes to achieve that end.

Remember the common denominator with all the pounding of the war drums are the countries looking to dethrone King Dollar.

China, Russia, Turkey, Syria, Iran to name a few.

The petrodollar is necessary to maintaining reserve currency status.

To see what will happen to our economy and political system if the USD looses preeminence, take a look at Venezuela.

Unfortunately we are $21 trillion in debt and looking at 100 trillion of unfunded liabilities. Like it or loathe it, without the brute force of our military, we’re toast.
