MUSIC IN THE AIR: ”THE SONG IS YOU”

Hampson is best known for opera and lieder. This version turns to the original orchestration, so now you can hear how it sounded in the show. Hampson spent so many years in Germany that he almost lost the use of English.

This is from 1958 and the Billy May era. Frank really swings.

Thanks LUV W!      :-)

Here's another good one from 1962 for our troops:

Mario was the great operatic tenor of the late Forties to his sudden death from a heart attack in the Fifties. He could handle opera and pop with equal aplomb.

This version from 1959 features his trio, and it’s a wonderful jazz take on the tune.

Nancy had a fine career in the Sixties, and this version with its Big Band jazz sound takes it farther than Sinatra.

It’s a rare singer who can make it to his 90s and still hit the mark every time. Tony’s voice may not be what it was fifty years ago, but he cuts to the heart and soul of a tune with the simplest arrangements. Even Sinatra said that Tony was “the best saloon singer in the business.”

I DREAM TOO MUCH

It was time for Jerome to go to Hollywood for real. He had spent time there in the early days of talkies when movie musicals were a dime a dozen. Now, like Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and George Gershwin, he was ready to tackle the Hollywood movie musical big league. This 1935 RKO musical bombed at the box office, but it marked Jerome’s first collaboration with Dorothy Fields. It starred Henry Fonda, opera diva Lily Pons, who would become a close friend of Gershwin, and Lucille Ball, who had just left the Goldwyn Girls chorus line. At best, the plot turns the film into a somewhat weak operetta.

”I DREAM TOO MUCH”

This is what it sounded like in 1935. It’s rather sappy, but you can hear what other artists might find in it.

The legendary French chanteuse tried her own take on the tune in the late Forties. The sappiness is gone and replaced with heartfelt sentiment.

”I DREAM TOO MUCH”

If a movie star couldn’t sing or could barely sing, Marni Nixon was called in to handle voice-over work in post production. I saw her perform songs by Mozart written for soprano and mandolin at a concert in Los Angeles forty years ago. She was the mother of the late Andrew Gold. Her accompanist, Lincoln Mayorga, was a fixture in the Los Angeles studio scene, best known for backing the Four Preps.

I’ll be out of the Canteen next weekend, but tune in two weeks from now when Jerome Kern hits the jackpot with “Roberta,” adding a whole slew of songs to the Great American Songbook.
