Well, aside from the fact that I think “global warming” is a hoax (historically, there have always been warm periods and cool periods), I think this is a good idea.
The panicked idea that we should simply shut down human life on this planet is ridiculous. With our scientific capacities, we should be able to find a solution.
The problem is that many people, mostly the left, won’t want it because they want to keep the hysteria going. Think how many millions Al Gore has made on it...

My grandfather grew stands of timber on his farm consuming lots of carbon dioxide , and he burned deadfall in the basement furnace to heat the farmhouse.
Evidently he was a scientist half a century ahead of his time...

It is currently possible to extract CO2 from the air, but the process is expensive. According to the paper, the new machine may be able to do so at a reduced price: $94 to $232 per ton of CO2 from the atmosphere.
...
That’s a pretty big spread, and they should keep their mouths shut until they actually do it. Otherwise, it looks like a scam.

so, at $200/ton how many billons of trillions of dollars will it take to “capture” enough CO2 to reduce the atmospheric levels by even 1 part per million, and what is the carbon cost to build enough “capture” factories to do that?

Of course more grant money will be needed. The government loves to put up money for anything they can label "green". The study I’d like to see is the study that calculates how much the taxpayer has to spend to save money on something he never intended to buy in the first place.

Well, if co2 is molecular (it is) then energy can be extracted from it. I think you’re right that it can’t be ‘converted’ to another fuel or at least cannot be converted to provide enough fuel to pay for it’s conversion.
See laws of thermodynamics.
