Trump's tariff on Canadian newsprint is killing US newspapers, Republicans warn
Washington Examiner ^ | 06/08/2018 | Pete Kasperowicz

A dozen House lawmakers have introduced legislation to remove President Trump's tariffs on Canadian newsprint so a study can be done on how much those tariffs are crushing local newspapers around the country.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., is a response to the 22 percent tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on some Canadian newsprint since the beginning of this year. Noem said that tariff has led to rising costs for local newspapers, and are a threat to their survival.

"In recent years, new tariffs on Canadian newsprint have increased paper prices by 20 to 30 percent," Noem said in a statement. "That's significant. A paper that services around 20,000 customers, for instance, could see paper costs rise by about a quarter-million dollars annually, threatening the newspaper's survival."

I would not recommend a trade fight or tariffs with Canada. The largest corrections need to be made with communist China and Germany, some other countries , and ( with sensitivity to its more fragile economy) Mexico

Agree on both statements. But what I don’t get is why in the hell is “conservative” Kristi Noem bothering with this?

Noem represents South Dakota, a state with many small town newspapers and almost no forestry jobs which benefit from selling wood chips and pulp. Some of the newspapers actually practive journalism in flyover America.

She is thinking localized and tactical while Trump is thinking international and strategic. IOW, change all these stupid multinational America last trade agreements to logical bilateral trade agreements which benefit both partners.

“Trump is killing the fake news media and the GOPe wants to save it.
Oh the irony,”

Is that not the truth.

Print is dead. No one wants to pay for anything anymore.

Also classified ads, want ads, real estate ads, and backpage escort ads are gone so even the ads don’t cover publication costs.

Syndicated circle jerk talking points didn’t do them any favors either.

But ‘Trump’...

There used to be paper mills all over the Midwest, and the west. Even the big mills in Wisconsin are closed now, unable to compete with the dumping from Canada and other countries.

Tough sh....

> FU parasitic GOP. <

Well, yes. A Democrat president announces a policy, and the Democrats fall in line. A GOPe president (GW Bush) announces a policy, and the GOPe falls in line.

But when Trump announces a policy - any policy - both Democrats and Republicans go out of their way to denounce it. This is just more evidence that there are not two parties in the US. There’s only one: the establishment.

Here’s an idea:

Instead of printing new newspapers, just keep recirculating the old ones — the “news” is always the same anyway:

“Americans outraged by Trump’s Latest Outrage”

The newspapers need to hire more employees like Ali Watkins, she’s apparently willing to work nights. /sarc

Why don’t these newspapers use RECYCLED paper?

Gee, do you think a REPORTER will ask them??

Great question. In Californicator land, we have been recycling newspaper for decades.

There is apparently not much demand for it, as about a year ago, we were advised/suggested that we throw newspapers into the compostable trash.

Newsprint has been dead for years. Show me a college kid who reads an actual newspaper. Obsolete.
