SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) -- U.S. immigration agents made more than 100 arrests Tuesday at a gardening and landscaping company, aided by about 200 law enforcement workers in one of the largest employer stings in recent years.

The 114 arrests occurred at two locations of Corso's Flower & Garden Center, one in Sandusky, a resort city on Lake Erie, and another in nearby Castalia. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it expected criminal charges including identity theft and tax evasion.

No criminal charges have been filed against Corso's, but the employer is under investigation, authorities said. Two locations were searched, and Khaalid Walls, an agency spokesman, said "a large volume of business documents" were seized.

The large-scale operation, assisted by aerial surveillance, is part of the Trump administration's increasing focus on employers that hire people in the country illegally, one that took hold about a year after the president took office, and came months after a surge in deportation arrests began.

More details at the link including the obligatory whine from unconnected "Josie Gonzalez, a Los Angeles attorney who represents businesses on immigration matters" as to why the government could not have made the arrests using fewer resources. Look up self-deportation, bimbo.

How could anyone think a company could get away with hiring hundreds of illegals?

I hope this company is soon out of business.

$5,000.00 fine per illegal worker per day for the first offense.

Double the fine and add 5 years in a Federal penitentiary for a second offense.

That’ll end this crap right quick.

If a certain electronic recycling company thought they could get away with it, the management would try.

It goes all the way down the line... how can a landlord rent to illegals?

We had a landlord around our community who routinely rented apartments to several families per unit... it was real crud

FWIW, OH wages are a problem. There's cheap invader labor competition across the economic spectrum. (those Eastern Europeans and Mideasterners blend in real well and many speak better English than some local US citizens). It's not going to improve completely without EVerify. The state votes conservative, but the pols govern Corporate Fascist.

That's my take. It's to a great degree anecdotal. So many acquaintances have children who are highly educated, competent, but moved elsewhere for considerably higher wages.

There’s not a suburb in America that’s not teeming with them daily.

And those jobs are well located for lower-skill Americans, including teenagers and college students, to fill.

I am of the opinion that there should be some kind of IRS involvement. Perhaps even a program where a citizen can report a business that uses illegal aliens and then receive some kind of reward. Perhaps a percent of the tax evasion that gets recovered, split by the number of registered informants.

This would create a system where citizens can be rewarded for notifying the IRS of businesses that are trying to cheat the system.

Exactly and undercover INS Agents wearing a wire should apply saying “I’m illegal” and then say “Here’s your fine” if they get hired.

Time to make an example of employers.

Hit this guy with the maximum fine (IIRC $10k per person per instance) and make it clear to all that undercutting by illegals is over.

If ICE raided the Taco John’s in downtown Minneapolis, the place would probably have to close. With the exception of the manager, it’s all Mexicans.

And folks, there’s no freakin’ way ALL of them can possibly be legal!

Exactly. Financial pain works very well.

They’d better have a bookshelf of white binders full of I-9 forms.

If they do, then they have followed the law.

You are FAR kinder than I would be. Double that for the first infraction and triple for the second ... but a financial incentive to NOT hire illegal aliens is sorely needed to bash the point home to these sorts of employers.
