Exit poll: Anti-immigrant SDS party leads in Slovenia election

Slovenia was a key transit point during the European refugee crisis with about half a million passing through in 2015.

The SDS party of veteran right-wing leader Janez Jansa is leading in Slovenia's parliamentary election, according to an exit poll published after voting ended on Sunday.

The exit poll for public television gave Jansa's SDS 24.4 percent with the "anti-system" party of comedian-turned-politician Marjan Sarec coming second on 12.6 percent.

If confirmed in official results, the results mean a coalition government likely will have to be formed. Preliminary results will be issued by the State Election Commission later on Sunday.

Jansa was forced to resign five years ago after a corruption scandal but has made a comeback, thanks in part to his strong rhetoric on immigration.

The right-wing leader, who formed a close partnership with populist Hungarian leader Viktor Orban, has vowed to defend the "Schengen border of Europe".

Slovenia was a key transit route for migrants and refugees trying to reach northern European states during the European refugee crisis of 2015.

Most were fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.

No single party is expected to pick up a majority in Sunday's election and other parties have promised not to work with Jansa if there is no outright winner.

Balkan analyst, Klisman Murati, told Al Jazeera that rhetoric on immigration was being used to distract from economic issues.

"It's an easy stance to take if you tell the people immigration is the main issue and that's why your country is not prospering," he said.

"It's worked to an extent in the US, it's worked as a start-up movement in France with Marine Le Pen, It's taken popularity in other EU countries."

Far-right and anti-immigration parties have made massive gains across Europe in recent years.

Anti-immigration parties have won elections in Italy, Poland, and Hungary, and are part of a coalition government in Austria.

Prime Minister Miro Cerar resigned in March after the Supreme Court ruled to annul a September 2017 referendum vote in support of a 1 billion euro ($1.17bn) railway project.

EU leadership has quite a scam going. They’re unelected. All they have to do is buy off politicians elected to stand up to the EU’s anti-nationalism policies. Hopefully, this new wave of elected pols in Hungary, Italy, and hopefully Slovenia and others to follow will not be bought off. If they are, I’m wondering what a proper response would be from the little folk whose votes have been ignored and their freedoms trampled.

Is this going to be the future of prosperous, Christian, free Europe? Poland, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Czech Republic. That's quite a core of nations that will NOT be overrun and destroyed by Muslim hordes. Good place for long-term investment?

The EUSSR doesn’t care about democracy or national sovereignty.

It was a bad idea in the first place and a United States Of Europe is pure fiction.

You left out Russia. If it were not for the EU dangling money in the faces of some countries and threatening them if they don’t conform there would probably be more countries leaning towards anti-immigration.

I think Marie Le Pen made a lot of sense and was surprised when she lost the election.

It makes me wonder who is counting the votes in EU countries. I was also surprised when Merkal won in Germany.

She should not have been surprised. Vote fraud rules everywhere.

“It’s not the people who vote that count. It’s the people who count the votes.”

Slovenia: Early vote count confirms right-wing party winning

They're the biggest winners, but not a majority. They got 25 percent of the vote. Like with Italy, it will be a while before we see if they can cobble together a coalition.

These countries all have death-spiral birthrates. In the long run, the real estate will belong to the children of others, and in the medium term, nobody but pensioners lives there.

It’s theoretically possible, but hasn’t been observed in the wild. One problem is that you have to have enough fertile young women in the population. Fertile young women have got the hell out of Eastern Europe.

Excuse me Murati, we are sick of Illegals, that is why Trump got elected. In Europe, people are getting sick of Illegals, too. The recently free countries of Eastern Europe knows that Illegals will take over...(The Soviets were Illegals and they are fighting to be free).

Yes, that does seem to be the case. There’s also demand in the Middle East. This will lead, in the “medium-run,” to the extinction of Slovenians and several other populations as distinct ethnic groups, at least in their historic homelands.

An interesting feature is that Eastern Europeans in the United States often have pretty large families. We have Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian families in my neighborhood with 4 or 5 children, which is almost unheard of in Europe.

I think that coming from Eastern Europe to America they are satisfied with their relative wealth and security. Having more kids is acceptable because they are not pursuing a ‘statement house’, second home and luxury car.
