The Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad has been accused of using chemical weapons, barrel bombs and torture against its own people during a seven-year civil war.
On Monday, it took up the rotating presidency of the United Nations-backed Conference on Disarmament.
The move was met with outrage from Western governments, but there was little they could do to prevent Syria from taking over the worlds only permanent multilateral body for negotiating arms control agreements for four weeks.

Iran was the head of the Human Rights Council in 2014. It depends on what the meaning of “rights” is.
Assads loosing power fast.....
On Monday, it took up the rotating presidency of the United Nations-backed Conference on Disarmament.
For good, down to earth humor, nothing beats the antics of a mindless bureaucracy. :)
iirc a few years ago USA was thrown off the UN Human Rights Commission and Cuba and Saudi Arabia put on. We got thrown off because, I think, our capital punishment was inhumane.
Now Syria is doing disarmament? Why do we give a penny to UN? Let’s back out and charge them rent for their digs in Turtle Bay.
Stockpiles of chemical weapons laying around at home (and now I guess other stuff too), Syria takes over the leading role at the U.N. asking other nations to disarm.
The United Nations, the gift that keeps on pumping it out as if it had a lifetime supply of Exlax.
Americans who continue to allow the UN to run its scams from our country are a bunch of fools.
I was trying to say the same thing you just did but couldn’t think of a way to put it. You are absolutely correct.
UN (United Nations) has morphed into UM (United Muslims)
I recall how many from the left and the right criticized Trump for bombing Syria. They claim that there were no chemical weapons, that he telegraphed what he was going to do, he didn’t bomb the airport etc etc.
Funny that you haven’t heard a peep from any of them since he bombed them.
You don’t think N. Kor, China, Russia, Iran etc didn’t notice that we sent, what over 100 missiles over there from what, 12 different launch pads, landing within a few feet from each other within 90 seconds?
Yeah - and “ accused” is far different from actually being guilty as charged
The “ West” is guilty of very biased and slanted reporting about Assad and the situation in Syria, as the CW incidents have revealed
Al Qaeda Propagandists known as White Helmets have been a major source of the anti-Assad reporting
As revealed by Turkish whistleblowers, Turkish special forces carried out the Ghouta attack.
After that infamous false flag, one would have to be an idiot to assume that Assad carried out the other attacks for which he's been blamed.
The western governments have got a lot to learn from Hogg about getting outraged.
I would love to sneak in and replace the UN twisted gun sculpture with a straightened gun sculpture.
Then light the whole building up. Basically I want to make “Fight Club” for a single building.
It is amazing that the last remaining ISIS pockets in Syria are near the the areas controlled by the US military. And the US has told Syria not to attack them.
Assad is not the problem in Syria. The US and it’s allies are. At this moment Israel has once again invaded Lebanese Airspace to carry out attacks.
Four American Soldiers were killed in Syria last week. I have yet to see their names. We should not be in Syria.
Every other alternative will result in the demise of the ancient Christian communities -- remember that Christians were first given that name in Damascus. If Assad goes then the 10% to 20% of Syrians that are Christians will be killed by the SunnijihadiRebels
Why in heaven's name would we want that????
Non-Muslim leader runs majority Muslim state. One could thing this is great outcome. Apparently some people prefer chaos over stability in this region.
He may be loosing his power on the wrong guy’s watch, against the wrong people.
Someday soon, hopefully, he’ll be losing his power for good.
God help us if he’s replaced by someone worse, though.
And here’s the latest lie from Assad as of June 1st...
“DAMASCUS- President Bashar al-Assad in interview today: There isn’t a single Iranian troop in Syria. Iranians in Syria are advisers invited by us. We only invited Russia to send troops.”
LoL
