Texas Town Crowdfunds Rebuilding Effort for Damaged Veterans Memorial (Brownwood, TX)

A western central Texas community jumped in to help an area veterans group raise funds to restore a war memorial that mysteriously sustained thousands of dollars of damage in the past week.

Breitbart Texas reported that four of 12 commemorative granite tablets, part of a larger memorial, were found in pieces on Sunday by Harold Stieber, president of the Central Texas Veterans Memorial Committee. He estimated the replacement tablets could cost more than $40,000.

The Central Texas Veterans Memorial recognizes all U.S. war veterans in a dozen stone structures and 14 plaques but specifically pays homage to the 259 locals who died while serving their country from World War I to military operations as recently as post-9/11. One of the destroyed tablets read, in part: “We honor all selfless heroes for your courageous service … Your sacrifice is what made this country great. We salute you!”

Dr. Steve Kelly, the group’s immediate past president, told Breitbart Texas that this tribute site, located in Brownwood, stands in a city-owned park that was once the 36th Division headquarters of the World War II military training facility Camp Bowie. He called the memorial a “salute to sacrifice.” Kelly estimated each of the destroyed tablets weighed roughly 3,000 pounds.

I read about this yesterday, but until this morning the actual town name was not mentioned. It is near where I live.

Although the cause of the devastation remain unknown, Brownwood police continue to investigate. For now, some believe gale force winds toppled the sturdy tablets. Others suspect vandalism.

The fundraiser will be held all day Saturday at Weakley-Watson Ace Hardware, first founded in 1876 as a wagon shop. Jacobs plans to auction off statue chunks from paper weight size to those that weigh up to 40 or 50 pounds. He says some of the larger decorative pieces will be sold through a silent auction. All proceeds will go to restoring the damaged war memorial.

Marxists such as Maobama, with all his racist screeds, are spawning human sewage at an alarming rate.

Possibly correct. I’m not yet speculating about that. I suspect that will be determined correctly, knowing Brownwood and the area.

Texas law enforcement (if the feds stay out) have a good history of solving crime.

I agree that I'm not sure this was gale force winds.

I don’t know. Vandalism is out of character in Brownwood. But today, anything is possible.

Our old family homestead ranch is near Brownwood. Great people there. Sent a donation.

My father trained at Camp Bowie to drive a new tank at Camp Bowie after WWII ended. Soldiers had to do 6 months service after the war to receive full benefits. He and my mother are at rest at the Zephyr cemetery.

Just wondering. If it was gale force winds, then why are only 4 of the 6 tablets that I see, were damaged. Believe me I lived for a while in Ft. Riley, KS. In an area known as tornado alley, so I known what winds can do. I do want to believe it was the wind, but in todays society, it is more likely that these tablets were vandalize.

It is possible that a number of very big guys could have toppled it. It is a tall narrow slab that is only anchored at the base with probably silicone sealant.

We have incredibly strong wind gusts here too. We saw some last night as a storm moved past us. We caught the southern edge of the storm moving from the SW to the NE. I was a my father’s to help him get ready for bed (he’s 92) and the noises and banging and pinking of light hail were unsettling.

Thank you for the personal connection comment.

We have a memorial in our city park (in town of 600) that has 3 large slabs. They are much wider than this one. The list of veterans is very long. There will be a memorial service there today.

Same here. Used to work there. Very conservative Baptist town. It does have it’s share of obama sons and more than it’s fair share of illegals. It is the end of the school year so who knows what little thugs did it. I’d be hauling in the senior boys for questioning, gathering up nearby empty beer bottles for fingerprints, and getting tire tread casts.

Did you hear Richland Springs and San Saba had a tornado and baseball sized hail last night? Haven’t heard of any injuries. RS is asking for clean up crews and water.

I’m glad we did not get any of that weather last night.

Since you know Brownwood, my father was on the first football team that Gordon Woods ever coached as head coach. He always remembered those guys and they truly loved him. He was always a winner. (Dad is 92 now, smile)

Brownwood football was an absolute nightmare under him.... a nightmare for other nearby towns that is. I was in one of them. Honestly, the game was anticipated with dread.

He had an era.

I was at first skeptical that the cause could possibly be the wind, but from the photos, it looks like the tablets were/are attached to the bases by one or two short lengths of metal bar that bent.

I'm still unconvinced that it wasn't vandalism, but a poor design or poor workmanship don't look completely impossible.

Well, he had an earned reputation.

My father, like I said earlier, was on the first football team he coached as head coach.

His name was added to our Veteran’s memorial, because he requested it. smile.
