If NK does not get the response of their liking, they will let it expire or hold out until last minute before doing an about-face again.

I like the Straits Times, they tend not to sugar coat things, But Neither does Trump.

Pence is something our Media dropped in the punchbowl.

Carry on.

What’s the worst that could happen?

This is all sabre-rattling face saving.
There will be a summit.
Korea will be unified by 2020.

I suspect the North Koreans are simply game-playing to make themselves out as more powerful than they are.

They know if they call the whole thing off, we’re right back to square one, where President Trump will either sanction them until they all starve, or get tired of them and send the bombs in. So my bet is that the thing’s going to happen.

And I hope Trump and Kim hit it off, become best buddies, and we have one less country on this planet with nukes that we have to worry about.

Gordon Chang was just on and says NK will do the summit because NK has more to gain than the US.

Kim can’t leave NK. Generals will take over. Nobody really loves Kim. His military leaders are cruel opportunists

Sounds like China is getting in little Kim’s ear again. POTUS alluded to this in his press conference with South Korea’s Moon yesterday. He’s onto them.

What’s China’s immediate aim? My guess is that Xi has already accepted a denuclearized North Korea as inevitable. POTUS left him no choice. But China doesn’t like the friendly, pro-western vibe Kim had been sending out. It’s one thing to have your client state give up its nukes. It’s another to see them become allied with the U.S. Xi is trying to influence the terms of whatever agreement is reached.

They ignore that it was pain that started the process - and have been promised even more pain if they decide to continue the way they have been going....trying to bluster as a face-saving ploy and hope Trump will throw them a bone so they can proudly claim they forced him to do something for them.

It is appearing more and more that

(a) Trump wanted too much to “resolve the Korea issue” that

(b) he did not get his team in place and charge that team for doing everything needed before a U.S.-Korea summit meeting, such that his team had strong agreement of a likelihood of success of some sort before an agreement for the summit was made, and

(c) that likelihood appears less and less, and

(d) Trump is in a diplomatic lose-lose situation.

He will “lose face” diplomatically if the U.S. is the 1st one to say there will be no meeting, and he will also “lose face” when they go ahead with the meeting ONLY to go ahead with the meeting, knowing and expecting no major substantive agreements or changes will come out of it.

I have said all along that there should have no announcement of any summit before the ground work for a successful summit had been done and which had good expectations of success. That is normally all done in deep background with neither party disclosing any part of those discussions until they have AGREED ON (a) a summit and (b) what will make it a success. The summit meetings themselves are usually AFTER preliminary agreements have already been reached, behind the scenes (like as Kissinger secretly did with China).

Trump’s problem is sometimes not his ideas, but his style, which pushes TOO MUCH into the public realm, and in the case of this summit meeting it is easy to see it may have all been for nothing, but its all - all the expectations - already out there and built up, by him.
