Climate change could be driving antibiotic resistance across the US
Daily Mail UK ^ | May 23, 2018 | By Mollie Cahillane

Climate change is wreaking havoc across the globe - melting ice caps, causing dangerous weather and decimating animal populations.

New research has found that it could also be increasing antibiotic resistance in bacteria.

A team of epidemiologists from Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital and the University of Toronto have found that higher local temperatures and population densities correspond with a higher degree of antibiotic resistance in common bacterial strains.

Previously, increase in resistance to common bacteria was thought to come from over-prescribing antibiotics.

'The effects of climate are increasingly being recognized in a variety of infectious diseases, but so far as we know this is the first time it has been implicated in the distribution of antibiotic resistance over geographies,' said lead study author and infectious disease specialist and research fellow at Boston Children's Derek MacFadden.

'We also found a signal that the associations between antibiotic resistance and temperature could be increasing over time,' he said.

The researchers found that an increase of 18degrees Fahrenheit is associated with increases of antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli (4.2 percent), K. pneumoniae (2.2 percent), and S. aureus (3.6 percent).

New NASA chief Bridenstine says humans contribute to climate change 'in a major way'

FoxNews/Science ^ | May 22, 2018 | Sarah Lewin

In a NASA town hall yesterday (May 17), NASA's new administrator, Jim Bridenstine, said that he knows Earth's climate is changing, and that humans contribute to it "in a major way," also supporting NASA's research into that important area. The statement is significant because Bridenstine has expressed doubt about human-caused climate change in the past, causing some to question his suitability to lead a fact-focused NASA.

In 2013, as an Oklahoma congressman, Bridenstine claimed there was no current trend toward global warming. More recently, such as in his NASA administrator confirmation hearings last November, he has acknowledged that human activity contributes to climate change. But he had stopped short of saying that humans are the phenomenon's primary cause.

At the NASA employee town hall, Bridenstine described how his thinking had "evolved" on the topic and laid out his current beliefs.

"I don't deny the consensus that the climate is changing; in fact, I fully believe and know that the climate is changing," he said. "I also know that we, human beings, are contributing to it in a major way. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. We're putting it into the atmosphere in volumes that we haven't seen, and that greenhouse gas is warming the planet.

"That is absolutely happening, and we are responsible for it," he added. "NASA is the one agency on the face of the planet that has the most credibility to do the science necessary so that we can understand it better than ever before."

>>have found that higher local temperatures and population densities correspond with a higher degree of antibiotic resistance in common bacterial strains.

And probably at a correlation of 1% and 99% respectively, but who counting. Let’s just use both and infer that they are equal.

Bill Nye was a Trump nominee’s guest at the State of the Union. Scientists were not amused

Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
January 31, 2018

Less than a year ago, Bill Nye was the scientific community’s bow-tied spirit animal, preparing to lead a legion of scientists in protesting what they called President Trump’s assault on science.

As The Washington Post’s Caitlin Gibson wrote before the Nye-chaired March for Science, Nye “has become more than the zany educator-entertainer who charmed kids with cartoonish sound effects. He is an activist for science, leading those now-grownups into political battle.”

Now, Nye finds himself in the crosshairs of that same community after many say he spent Tuesday night hobnobbing with the enemy: Sitting next to Trump’s pick to head NASA at the State of the Union address.

The conflict has been brewing for weeks, since the Planetary Society announced that Nye, its CEO, had accepted an invitation to attend the speech with Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.), whom Trump tapped to lead NASA in September.

“When a congressman and current nominee for NASA Administrator asks you to be his guest at the State of the Union address in Washington, D.C., how do you respond?” the society said in making the announcement. “For us, the answer was easy. Yes, Bill would be there.” ...”

If it’s not Climate change it’s racism or the best thing to blame is Trump.

I certainly can’t be because our 3rd world imports stop taking antibiotics once they feel better, instead of completing the course and making certain the pathogens are dead. Not to mention that many arrive carrying drug resistant TB and other gifts for America.

We are headed back to the days before WWII when common infections could not be halted with medicine. A golden age is ending.

So too could skunks and bureaucrats.

Why do journalists find any thesis to a story qualified with "could, might, may, possibly, etc...." a disqualifier for reporting "news"?
