I’m becoming more and more convinced that Halper’s a distraction—maybe a patsy; maybe not—but a shiny to divert attention away from a more important figure.

This is my opinion too. They picked the most Republican guy in on it, Halper, to make it seem like something routine.
In fact, there were multiple people, pulling various angles, from which they intended to implicate, indict, and jail Trump and all of his associates as revenge for even attempting to challenge DC power.
But they lost the election.

Don’t count out who easily could’ve been working with Obama, i.e., BFFs Bill Clinton and George HW Bush. They’re buddies and had everything to gain. Bubba could return to the White House via Hillary.
