FUKUSHIMA, Japan -- The leaders of 16 Pacific island nations and territories, as well as Japan, Australia and New Zealand, adopted a declaration at the end of a two-day summit Saturday committing to concrete action toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
It was the first time for participants to refer to the North Korean threat at the summit, which is held every three years. This year's summit, the eighth, was held in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.
The leaders welcomed the Panmunjeom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula, issued at the April summit between the leaders of North and South Korea. The leaders "confirmed their common goal of the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," the declaration said.
They committed to "exerting continued pressure on North Korea, including by fully implementing and enforcing" the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
The commitments come ahead of what would be a historic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un scheduled for June 12.
The Pacific leaders expressed "deep concerns" about ongoing ship-to-ship transfers at sea, through which the North illegally imports goods banned by the U.N. Security Council resolutions, including oil products. They agreed to enhance controls to prevent such activities, including removal of registration of North Korean vessels.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for scrapping weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles of any range possessed by North Korea.
"We agreed to seek to realize complete, verifiable and irreversible scrapping of the weapons," Abe said.
Japan called for understanding and cooperation for an early resolution of the issue of suspected abductions of Japanese citizens, receiving support from the leaders, Abe said.
"When relations with North Korea are normalized, we are ready to offer economic cooperation, which is essential for development of North Korea," the prime minister said.

The a-hole left said the era of the Super Power was finished. A Super Power can get things done PROJECTING that power. Even China looks weak in their own sphere.
