CNN reported Friday that the inventory will seek to account for grenades, small arms, machine guns, rifles and pistols at eight bases under the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC).

The AFGSC did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment about the reported inventory.

At the same time, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have been called to examine the matter, CNN reported.

Depending upon how frequently storage facilities are inventoried, the supply officer and lead NCO in charge when the items went missing may already be retired or discharged, so the new guys end up taking the heat. Or, the new guys could be the crooks!

As I recall 100% munitions inventories are done every six months as routine.

But, if the thief is the one doing the inventory, the missing items are still there! They'll only turn up missing after he's gone.

They kept ours locked in the arms room. They were doing a routine inventory when they noticed one of the cases was empty.

I've seen a case where half the sleeping bags were stolen from the armory. The other half were unrolled, cut in half, then re-rolled loosely, so that, when looking at them way up on the top shelf, there appeared to be the correct number of sleeping bags present ...

The guy who was rumored to have taken the night sight didn’t have access to the armory, as far as I know. The stuff in the armory was secured behind a locked steel door and a locked steel-cage door and the firearms were individually locked into steel racks. I assume the other sensitive (expensive) items were locked in cabinets. The sight must have been taken as items were being returned to the armory, but, to the best of my knowledge, the armorer wasn’t disciplined for failing to verify the return of an item.

When I was stationed in Thailand, I ran some tests on some electronic gear at a Special Forces camp on the Gulf of Thailand. One of the SF guys showed me an NOD he'd picked up on the beach after a joint US-Thai exercise. Evidently someone in the "landing force" had accidentally dropped it.

I intimately understand the security of AF munitions. It would likely be in the plural as in “thieves” to pull it off.
