THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

SALLY

It should be no surprise that this song would be pulled off the shelf during World War II. Here it’s subjected to a 1945 swing arrangement meant to buck up people’s spirits while American servicemen were fighting overseas.

Jerome hated it when a song was recorded outside the confines of one of his shows, and it drove him to rage to hear jazz variations of his songs. It wasn’t until after his death in 1945 that jazzmen tackled the Kern songbook.

Chet moved to Amsterdam where the authorities took a more lenient view of heroin and the people who used it. There he could find a more comfortable home for his demons. They finally devoured him in 1988. This is from his last concert, and it’s a revelation.

Oscar always put his own brand on anything he recorded. In this 1953 recording, he speeds it up considerably.

New Zealand’s favorite operatic soprano recorded a number of disks dedicated to the various composers of the songbook. Her 1993 Jerome Kern disk gives the tune an operatic sheen and uses the original intro.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

The world changed for Jerome in 1925 when he met Oscar Hammerstein, with whom he would entertain a lifelong friendship and collaboration. As a young man, Kern had been an easy companion, but he became less so in his middle years. He once introduced himself to a producer by saying, “I hear you’re a son of a bitch. So am I.” He rarely collaborated with any one lyricist for very long. With Hammerstein, however, he remained on close terms for the rest of his life. Their first show was “Sunny,” which ran for 517 performances on Broadway. Note that Hammerstein was a purveyor of corn, something he would later bring to Richard Rodgers.

This is from the Publius Museum of Music by an American singer who made her way to Paris after World War I and stayed. No Jim Crow laws in France! No problems with nudity either!

This is a fine jazz setting from the early years of Pearl’s career. That’s some great jazz clarinet work.

Tune in next week for more Jerome Kern and the Great American Songbook. You’ll hear how “Show Boat” changed the American musical theater forever.
