How California’s primary could stop Democrats from retaking the U.S. House

California’s primary system could thwart Democrats and Republicans alike on June 5, shutting either party out of key races in the fall. Under the state’s top-two primary, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes advance to the general election in November, regardless of party. Democrats fear that the high numbers of hopefuls on the primary ballot could split the vote and leave the party without candidates in high-stakes congressional races in November. Meanwhile, Republicans are worried they could be left off the ballot in the governor’s race and other statewide contests in November, giving their voters less of an incentive to turn out to vote for GOP House candidates.

The original intention was that you’d freeze out the Republicans by the method of this primary ‘gimmick’. Everyone thinks that it’d always be the two top Democrats that emerge from this system.

So, what you could see, as a counter-tactic....some folks showing up with money and helping some number three, four or five Democrat guy steal off votes, and dilute the votes gathered, then run just one or two GOP guys only. In that method, you’d end up with maybe two GOP folks only. It’s too early to affect the 2018 election, but I think you will see this tactic in the 2020 election and affecting three or four districts which would normally go Democrat.

Wait, you mean the people might get to select who they send to represent them? Egad, can't have that! C'mon Cali 'rats - show us how a real fascist ... er ... socialist ... um ... "progressive" ensures the little people are taken care of by their betters. ;-/

The LA Times is just poking us in the eye again.

The Democrats put this system in place to consolidate its power by shutting out Republicans altogether from even being on the ballot in November.

And they even got the feckless California Republican Party to endorse the measure that installed this “top two” primary.

For the Times to run a story like this is just silly. They have us by the you-know-what’s.

There are 27 people running for Governor

There are 11 people running for Lt. Governor

There are 32 people running for the Senate.

I don’t know what is going to happen but I suspect the fix is in.

It would be justice. This vote splitting is how we got McTraitor, Flake, Grahem and many others. In fact if Joe stays in we wil be stuck with McSally.

In the November election, write-in votes are not counted, so if two Democrats are on the ballot in the race for governor and/or US Senator in November, you must either vote for one of them or not vote at all.

I can pass on their editorializing but the Times/USC polling got Trumps election right.

There are 7 Billion foreigners available to vote in California. The current population is only 40 million.

7 Billion >> 0.040 billion

Your vote is worthless in California.

Don’t be absurd. If the Republicans somehow managed to finish in the top two spots on important (say Governor, Senator) offices, they’d go to the courts and have their system overturned, likely on the grounds that it would deprive minorities from voting their choice. I see them doing the same thing if their scheme to do an end-round the Electoral College were to result in a Republican winning office.

The Democrats did not do this the people in California voted for this scheme because they were too stupid to realize or read what it was all about.
