Frontline police officers will carry handguns for the first time to cope with the terrorist threat in rural areas, under plans being considered by chief constables.
Officers responding to emergencies in remote locations where firearm units cannot be quickly deployed would be routinely armed.
Simon Chesterman, of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said that the proposal was being considered in areas of England and Wales where it was prohibitively expensive to have fully trained specialist units on standby.
It will be seen as controversial because Britain has a tradition of unarmed policing and less than 10 per cent of officers are trained to use weapons.

Even the British are starting to understand it takes a good guy with a gun to stop bad guys with or without a gun sometimes.
The hope and pray method of policing ended with the invasion of cavemen into the UK.
Soon all police in the UK will be armed out of necessity. Probably have to keep all police paired up too.
You do bring up a good point. With guns not part of the English culture; the police who carry will need some basic training. A 4-5 day course should get their muscle memory dialed in and the need to protect their sidearm at all times from anyone. No more daydreaming either. It's head on a swivel time; on duty or not.
I wonder how long it will take them to realize all law-abiding citizens should have the same right to carry; at least at home.
I say no armed police unless the citizens are armed as well.
Government good guys with guns have a way of turning into bad guys when citizens are unarmed.

Good points but I don’t think 4 or 5 days will bring them up to speed with millions of us with 20, 30, 40, 50 years of experience.
That works here but they need to start somewhere. I hope they realize citizens (not subjects) need to be able to protect themselves too. Even if their police are all eventually armed; they can't be everywhere at once. We in America know we have to take responsibility for our own protection; at least in the short run.

Start with the citizens, then. If you start with the police, then you have the situation I just described - armed govt agents vs unarmed citizens.
You're right of course but it would be a start. I would like to see much more training for their sake. Just the ability to reflexively and smoothly pull their sidearm without thinking would be a good start. Obviously good shooting and safety practices would also need to become second nature. Under stress we are all only half as good as practice time at best unless very experienced like big city SWAT or SEAL's.
Even here in the USA there are a lot of good LEO's who don't really like guns but because it's required of them to carry; they do the bare minimum of training and quals. In the UK it would be a lot like getting teachers to carry who are adamantly opposed to it. Not the same of course; but change like that might come hard to some of those who never thought they would be required to carry a sidearm on duty and off.
I view firearms as a tool similar to the Leatherman multi-tool on my belt. I may not use it for months but then all of sudden I'm glad I kept wearing it and keeping it handy. I hope I never need to use a firearm for protection for myself or others but if I don't have one; that option is gone (of course). Constitutional carry should be the law of the land in all state IMHO. Barring that; at least concealed carry permit holders should be able to legally (concealed) carry in all 50 states even if the limit in the mag is only 7 rounds in some states. That's just silly IMHO but look who make those regressive laws.

I would like to see everyone in the UK be able to arm to protect themselves and family but that’s simply not going to happen unless things get a lot worse there and it just might. Those cavemen have a plan to take over the UK and Europe just like the Hispanic La Raza has for the Southwest.
Screw that. Make the cops as unarmed and defenseless as the subjects of the Crown are.

So don’t elevate govt agents above the citizens. That is still a stituation where citizens are defenseless against armed govt. agents.

And what makes you think police will be any obstacle? They enforce anti-free speech and anti-gun laws, plus they look the other way when British children are raped and threatened by muslim grooming gangs.

That is a problem. There is no free speech as we know it in the UK.
