President Donald Trump is considering an Army veteran who is a Republican member of Congress for the position of Veterans Affairs secretary, part of a lengthening search for a nominee following the abrupt firing of David Shulkin in March.

A White House official on Thursday said Rep. Brian Mast of Florida, who was elected to the House in 2016, was among the list of candidates for the job heading an agency of 360,000 employees serving 9 million veterans.

The White House official would not say if Mast is the leading candidate for the VA position. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Mast is the first member of Congress to open a lawmaker satellite office in a VA facility, setting up shop in the West Palm Beach VA to meet with veterans. He was wounded when serving in Afghanistan in 2010, which resulted in the amputation of both of his legs.

Mast, 37, has often voted along with Trump on key issues in Congress, more recently announcing he supported an assault-weapons ban following the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

He is a gun-grabber from my district. I intend to support whoever runs against him in primary.

I think he should appoint a group of veterans with no political connections, but who have used and are experienced with what it is like to be a patient in the VA system. Make it a committee, with a representative from each branch of the service.

I’ll ask the same question about him that I asked about Jackson; what is it about his background that makes the administration think he can run the second largest bureaucracy in government?

Very similar to my thinking. The VA should be run by someone who has experience being its customer - a disabled vet.

No. No. No DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT put a GOP U.S. house seat up for contention now. Pick someone, anyone, who does not now hold an elected seat in government, federal or state. Pick a former military high ranking officer if you want, just not an elected official.

I wonder how much grief the senate panel would give a quadruple amputee disabled vet.

I’m so sick of DC tyranny these days, I would join a pitchfork torches million patriot revolt in a heartbeat.

“The VA should be run by someone who has experience being its customer - a disabled vet.”

Well, he fits the bill, then.

I was kind of surprised by that gun grabber stance. I live in the next district North and I’ve seen ads lately by a guy trying to unseat Mast. Really really bad ads. No personality at all.
