Americans are more anxious than ever over paying their bills

Americans are stressed out.

People are plagued by financial anxiety, according to the results of an annual poll of 1,004 adults conducted by the American Psychiatric Association released Monday.

This year’s national anxiety score — derived by mean scores on a scale of zero to 100 — is 51, a five-point jump since 2017. Two-thirds of respondents said they were extremely or somewhat anxious about paying their bills or expenses. Last year, 56 percent of people reported financial worries.

But some people are more worried than others about finances. Women are more anxious than men and also had a greater increase in anxiety than men this year compared to last year. More than half (57 percent) of women 18 to 49 years of age reported being more anxious this year, compared to 38 percent of men in that age group.

Nearly four in five Hispanic adults reported concerns about paying the bills, as did three-quarters of women and young adults (ages 18 to 34).

Only 19 percent of people reported being less anxious than they were a year ago, whereas 39 percent were more worried. “That increased stress and anxiety can significantly impact many aspects of people’s lives, including their mental health, and it can affect families,” APA president Anita Everett said in the report. Only anxieties about health and safety outranked financial anxiety.

People don't realize how recurring bills and expenses kill them. Cell phones, gym memberships, cable tv, Internet, Amazon, Netflix, cars, insurance this and that. There is so much money to be had in collecting recurring payments. That is a huge change from when I was young when people bought their stuff and didn't feel like getting suckered into continual bleeding.

Don't forget School taxes. In NYS they can be 5-25,000 a year and growing at 3-6%

Good one.

Now just cheerfully send bills to Bernie and the Millenials who love socialism. They won’t mind paying.

There is not a waking moment when I am not worried about how to cope with all the bills and taxes .

Why? Too many bills, not enough income? Few bills, not enough income? Enough income, just a worrier?

I often feel sick to my stomach whenever I spend any substantial amount of money, and I never enjoy it.

If you have savings that you've properly earned and saved, and you're providing for your family and any future financial needs, why do you feel badly about spending money?

Are you suggesting that you can't go out for a nice meal with your family and enjoy it? Take a vacation in your favorite place? Pay to purchase tools or equipment to enjoy a favorite hobby or recreation?

Just curious.

I’ll be 70 3 months, I have to make the hard choice of paying for VISION or DENTAL both which will cost Thousands of $$ each, despite the fact we have Medicare/Tricare Life. VISION wins.

NEITHER ARE COVERED SERVICES.

“Nearly four in five Hispanic adults reported concerns about paying the bills,”

They might consider moving to Mexico or Central America——much cheaper to live there.

Last week I went to the “eye doctor” for an exam and glasses. My Blue Cross of Arkansas doesn’t cover “vision”. It would however if I Needed an eye operation. The clinic decided they would try to sneak the visit past Blue Cross as a “medical exam” rather than “vision”. If successful they will save me $135.00.

The results: far sightedness, wear and tear on the lenses, and larger than normal optic nerves.

We don’t owe anyone anything. House and cars paid for but yeah, you’re right. Those monthly recurring bills are a pain. Cable, PG&E, car insurance, house insurance, health insurance, water, gas, phone. They really add up. We’ can afford them but it always surprises me how much the total is.

Lasix to repair badly done Cataract implants left Ripples on the Corneas, NO FIX for that, the upper and lower blockage in the Meibomian gland on the eyelid cleaning is NOT covered, nor are any of the lubricant eye drops I use up to 12 times or more a day, and several times at night. $15 or more a small bottle. All 4 tear ducts are cauterized shut, should not have DRY EYES. But ALL Hypertension meds cause excessive dryness and GI issues. NONE of it is repairable.

Wow,how do you sleep? I have the fault of Mineral Men: a flubby heart and high blood pressure. Yet the high blood pressure medicine doesn’t seem to have any side effects.
