The New York Times Company added 139,000 digital-only subscribers in the first quarter of 2018, a 25.5 percent increase from the same period a year ago, helping to fuel total revenue growth and offset a decline in digital advertising.

False metric. I keep seeing their ads slashing prices for subscriptions.

In an age where Rachel Maddow is one the top cable shows, anything can happen.

The people who hate Trump REALLY REALLY REALLY hate him.

Makes about as much sense as paying for cable in North Korea.

In fact, I expect within ten years the New York Times to be mostly subscribed in digital editions. There will be relatively few actual papers printed.

Print media is on the way out.

Had trouble finding the small local newspapers in hardcopy. Had to go to the newspaper building office to find them and buy them. Otherwise, they are no where to be found. Each have their own pay website.

And the major city newspaper (the Denver Post), is about a third of its former self. It used to be huge on Sunday; now it is nothing — I know, I had to deliver the beast.

revenue from new digital subscribers will NEVER come close to replacing revenue lost to fleeing print subscribers for ANY print publication ... the situation with digital ad revenue vs print ad revenue is even grimmer ...

No, no, no. Revenue went up because they fired almost all of their editors.

Which is also, by the way, why they can't report on real news.

139,00 subscribers? Wow... with a 5% click through rate you could message almost 6500 people through the New York Times....amazing!

“And the major city newspaper (the Denver Post), is about a third of its former self.”

or less. the DP is unbelievably pathetic now as a newspaper ... not only uber-leftist, but otherwise filled with wire-service excrement ... the other papers in the smaller cities are mostly owned by the same outfit as the DP, and everyone of them contains pretty much as the exact same crap as the others ... there’s almost no actual local news now in any of them ... it’s surprising that any are still in business ... no one over the age of 40 buys a newspaper, so i imagine they’re all in death spirals as their current subscribership ages and dies off ... certainly almost no one advertises in them any more ... occasionally i pick up a free one or the other at those sales pitch tables located in King Soopers and analyze the content, both ads and “news” ... ...

No kiddin.

I am cheering on its demise which will eventually come, no doubt.

BTW, it is because of the DP that I started to question Democrat policies and beliefs and the party. You can say that they turned me conservative... so many years ago. Actually, I was always conservative but didn't know it. Thank you DP for opening my eyes!

me too ... except it was two slightly different media things that awakened the nascent conservative in me and opened my eyes completely to the pernicious evil of the leftist fake stream media:

1. i stopped watching nightly news when Brokaw ran a story about the proposed clinton “assault” weapon ban, yammering on about semi-auto weapons, while shows vids of people shooting full-auto weapons with arcs of brass spraying out.

2. i stopped reading the leftist fake stream media when i encountered an AP article that was a sob story about Somalian pirates working in the pirate biz and how hard-working they were to support their families back when Somalian pirates were a thing under obama ... the story referred to the pirate as “Mr. Pirate” ... it was a BIG WTF? moment for me: “Mr. Pirate”? ... are you shitten me? ... i looked at the byline and the story was written by a couple of muslim arabs ... never again

Nothing as dramatic for me. :)

I remember reading an article in the Post — paraphrasing “At least Clarence Thomas isn't a WASP.” It was written by an African American during the conformation hearings.

I am sure that he was trying to be coy, but it ticked me off and the article hit all of my buttons — it was clearly racist, “how dare a black man be conservative,” and he attacked religion.

From then on, I read the Post with skepticism; glass is half empty. Plus, the Post got worse over time. Their attacks were subtle at first and then progressed to outright lies and fabrications. Like your experiences.

That was when I started searching for a conservative news source and found Rush. Newt Gingrich had a TV show for a while, too.

I wonder if the reason why the Post and other old standby news sources got so crazy is because they, the "bosses" in media machine, noticed the wave of conservatism sweeping the country and believed that they had to counter balance the conservatism with extreme liberal ideas.
