It is convenient to be able to stay at the casino where you do the most gambling, but there are a few decent hotels right off the strip that don't have resort fees, and the walk to the strip is not along the strip so very little harassment and smoke.

There's a trick where you slip a $20 in with your credit card when you check in to get an upgrade. It was on the internet so it might be so overused now that it's no longer a thing, but it's worth a try.

The California train to nowhere should have gone between LA and Vegas. If that had happened there would be a lot of people who wouldn't have to park a car.

yes the train. Ontario and Burbank to Barstow. One line Barstow to Vegas. Gamble on board. Paid for by fairs and hotel taxes in Vegas, taxes on gambling wins on board. Too obvious.
