PHOENIX -- Thousands of teachers in Arizona and Colorado descended upon their respective Capitols for a second day in a growing educator uprising. Educators in both states want more classroom resources and have received offers either for increased school funding or pay, but they say the money isn't guaranteed and the efforts don't go far enough.
The walkouts are the latest in demonstrations that spread from West Virginia, Oklahoma and Kentucky.
Teachers said they won't return to work until they feel their message has been heard. Alexis Aguirre, a second-grade teacher in Phoenix, said living paycheck to paycheck has forced her to consider other careers.
"It's really heartbreaking to have to choose between our families and the professions that we love, but it doesn't make financial sense to stay in the classroom," Aguirre told Yuccas.
Teachers want the 20 percent raise but also have four other demands, including raises for support staff, yearly teacher raises, a restoration of school funding to 2008 levels and no new tax cuts until the state per-pupil funding reaches the national average.
More than 840,000 students were out of school as a result of Thursday's walkouts, according to figures from The Arizona Republic.

Keep walking. Take your egos with you.
What an excellent break for the young minds of these two state’s youth.
I suspect most of them would discover it doesn’t make financial sense to leave the classroom. They just don’t know it.
If you find a better offer / place to work, I recommend you take it. However, many teachers take that job because they perceive it easier and dont want to compete for better jobs.
This has been a long time coming in AZ. Our state legislature figured out that if you say the money will go to schools people will vote yes on almost any revenue generator. But they also figured out that if you actually give the money to schools they might be properly funded and people vote no. So they’ve floated a bunch of bills to “fund the schools” in the last decade which actually decreasing school spending. Leaving AZ schools a freaking train wreck and teacher salaries stagnant. They’ve got an easy fix: take all that money that was promised to the schools and actually give it to them. But they’re too stupid to take it.
I’d love to see them all quit. The kids would be better off with no one rather than these fascist hyenas.
Jeff Jr. Is a teacher in Chandler and he is pissed beyond words over this. A lot of this is being driven by the principals who are a bunch of commies. The deal the teachers were offered is good and they were happy with it, it was voted down by the custodians and cafeteria staff
A twenty percent raise they didn’t want?
Pull a Reagan, fire the entire bunch, then hire new teachers that want to work.
Ill bet there are a bunch that would love to have their jobs, that they seem are demeaning to the.
And some districts in AZ will be closed on Monday also as a result.
I say the only place teacher's salaries should come from is LOCAL sources only...
Please Steal my Meme
fixed a minor erropr
Just close the doors. Shut the schools down and let the parents take care of the problem.
It would be better if it said “LOCALLY GROWN”
T least they are there for the children.
FIRE ALL OF THEM!! and Charge them with 850,000 counts of Truancy
stop union withholding. If the unions want to be paid get their members to write a check each month
Home school!
Arizona’s strike was organized by a 23 year old first year music teacher who worked on Bernie Sanders campaign. He claims this is a grassroots movement. This is a dnc organized multi state operation. Their goal is to make Republicans look bad going into the elections. They are already pushing their Democrat candidates, who will end corporate tax cuts, and raise taxes. Somehow, a lot of the teachers are clueless as to the hidden agenda.
