... But a threat is hanging over oil. What is most ominous is the spread of the destructive idea that, because of climate change, all fossil fuels, including oil, must be kept in the ground. Russia bears some of the blame for that underhanded campaign, using social media to twist American public opinion against oil production to achieve its own devious goal: push up world oil prices.
With Russias help, the keep-it-in-the-ground movement threatens to impede the production of oil offshore and stifle hydraulic fracturing in shale formations. At the same time, Russia is spearheading opposition to the construction of new oil and natural gas pipelines.

Our friends...the Russians! LOL
Hmm , the Democrats want to keep it in the ground
All the more reason we need to drill, drill, drill!
Energy independence is the highest matter of National Security.
There are no “friends”, only interests.
The American Left has always been a Useful Idiot for Russia/Soviet Union. This is just the latest example.
“Energy independence is the highest matter of National Security.”
EXACTLY!
FLOOD the world with cheap abundant AMERICAN oil. Bankrupt Russia AND OPEC!
I remember the Arab oil embargo of ‘73, and even as a kid I wondered why we weren’t bombing their water desalinization plants.
But uncle Vlady would never help Assad cover up a chemical weapon attack.
Oil kept in the ground is just money in the bank. It will all be produced eventually until and unless a different and cheaper source of energy is found.
Also, nobody ever seems to think about this: Almost 30% of all oil use is NON-FUEL in nature. That’s not going away.
Also, huge populations of people in China and India and even Africa are entering the modern age and will be using a lot of energy for many years. That’s several billion people.
The needed energy will be produced as profits can be made. Obama tried to slow production, and said gas needed to cost 7 to 8 dollars a gallon. How did that work out for him?
This is why I never worry about cities, counties and states that restrict or forbid energy production. It’s just money in the bank, and when they need badly enough, they’ll drill, period.
If we believe that geo-strategic oil politics are so important that the Russian Government are running leftist / pro-environment propaganda campaigns designed to limit US oil production - Then we should also accept the premise that the US engaged in destructive regime change in Libya and Syria specifically because of oil and pipeline politics.
With the difference that Libya and Syria are Libya and Syria and America is America.
Doesn’t mean the underlying premise is wrong, but one does not prove the other. It would be a classic logical fallacy to insist on that being true.
Oil in the ground is an asset, but is wisest to take when it is at its most valuable point. Oil prices seem to have peaked, and alternative sources continue to gain steam. Leaving it in the ground, as prices continue their downward trend until the day that we aren't using nearly as much anymore, is throwing out literally many trillions of dollars of national capital.
Especially on Erf day, it seems best to get that nasty stuff out of Mother Erf and turn it into clean water and CO2.
It’s not just the Ruskys It’s any country that has the stuff and was selling it to US. We should be looking at who and what is in the portfolios of not only politicians but key decision level bureaucrats preaching globullism.
Maybe we should stop exporting petroleum products now, crude and distilled. In fact, there should be a federal law that sets up a formula that when the average national gasoline price reaches a certain level all petroleum exports are halted.
Even Exxon, like everyone else, acknowledges that the oil in the ground will become stranded. But, there is a lot of disagreement as to when that will be. Statoil says it will happen sooner while Exxon says later.
As for synthetics being made from petrochemicals, they can be made from agrichemicals as well. Polyethylene, rather than being made from ethane(nat gas), can be made from ethanol. Polypropylene from propanol. Butadiene from Butanol.
What has kept our oil in the ground was decades of leftist AMERICAN-based environmental extremism. Blame the Democrats, not the Russians.
I thought the US was producing oil like mad aiming to become self-sufficient. What’s happening?
The REAL “Muh Russia” .... Libtards doing the dirty work on behalf of Vlad’s fossil fuel interests.
