To lead on climate, countries must commit to zero emissions
The Guardian ^ | April 17, 2018 | by Isabella Lövin

The UK’s climate laws forged a path for others to follow. But as progressive nations commit to zero emissions, it must reclaim its leading role, writes Sweden’s deputy prime minister.

What does it mean for a nation to be a “climate leader” in 2018?

At the very least, it must mean having a firm plan in place to deliver your nation’s fair share of the Paris agreement. During that stunning fortnight in December 2015, 195 governments freely and willingly committed not only to keep global warming well below 2C, but to aim for the safer level of 1.5C. And they committed to bring net greenhouse gas emissions down to zero.

Within a generation, Sweden will not be contributing to the problem of climate change. Science tells us that if all nations adopt this target, there is a good chance that we will live up to the commitments that we made at the Paris summit, and keep climate change within safe boundaries.

Certainly it is not acceptable for any government or statutory adviser to say that net zero cannot be done. It has to be done – because as long as we continue emitting carbon dioxide, temperatures will continue to rise.

Ten years ago, the UK won the gratitude of many other nations, including my own, by adopting the Climate Change Act. But science and diplomacy move on; and when the IPCC and the Paris agreement are telling us that greenhouse gas emissions need to reach net zero by mid-century, it is incumbent on us all to reflect that in our national programmes. That, at the very least, is what it means in 2018 to be a “climate leader”.

But of course China, the world’s biggest polluter, gets a free pass. But hey, it has nothing to do with politics.

“Zero” omissions??? These people are anti-science, reality-deniers. What lunatics and fools. I fart in their general direction.

The UK wants to go back to Dickens’ time with the added benefit of the Muslim call to prayer. Better visit before it turns into Tripoli.

Except government leaders and the very rich, of course.
They can buy carbon absolution.

Zero Emissions = Zero Humans

Some plans have big flaws.

On-the-fly leftist thesaurus:

For every instance of ‘commit’ substitute ‘submit.’

Dicken’s time was no environmental utopia. The soot and smog were legendary.

There’s that ‘fair share’ meme again.

No thanks, Isabella.

If they're worried about the environment, then they should be addressing corrupt political systems that cause starvation and poverty, prompting people to do what ever they can to survive - including burning rain forests, deforestation, unsustainable farming practices, over-fishing, etc.

You aren't thinking far enough ahead. How about, just spit-balling, here, we use nitrogen, and exterminate all Leftists?

You know, the ol' herd 'em into camps and process thing.
The technology is on the shelf, and I'm sure the DNC/Antifa/BAMN/Climate Changers will be understanding about it. They certainly will be eager martyrs to the cause...

I suggest all the gaia worshiping fools start zero emitting immediately! No more breathing, pissing or crapping, and when they expire we will have to use special crematoriums to insure zero emissions afterwards. Then they can be returned to gaia for eternity. They will be happy, we’ll be happy and gaia will be happy, who could ask for anything more!

I love these articles. OK, let’s assume we’re willing to get to “zero” emissions. How to the hundreds of millions of people in these countries heat their houses? Use electricity, even at reduced levels? We’d go back into the pre-industrial era. But even that wouldn’t reduce emissions — we have billions of people on Earth now. They all would start burning coal and wood to stay warm. Hundreds of millions would die.

Open burning releases carbon dioxide into the air. That's not carbon-neutral! The Swedish government should tell these guys to stop burning Swedish flags.
