I really used to admire Jefferson, but the guy did have character problems.

Right...see my post at #17 above. As I became more educated about the finer points of American history, I lost some respect for Jefferson.

indeed. there has been a great deal of additional scholarship recently (sally hemmings utterly aside) that fairly well destroys the TJ myth that has endured for centuries. most of what everybody “knows” about the man is wrong. that’s basically history out of a coloring book.
