French navy ship equipped with cruise missiles that could strike Assad was 'aggressively buzzed

A Russian warplane this weekend flew over a French warship at low altitude in the eastern Mediterranean, a deliberate breach of international regulations, a French naval source said on Tuesday.

The weekly magazine Le Point said the Russian plane had flown over frigate Aquitaine over the weekend and was fully-armed.

It also added that the Aquitaine could be used in strikes against the Assad regime.

The incident comes as tensions mount between Russia and Western nations following a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria on April 7. At least 60 people were killed in the attack, according to a Syrian relief agency.

France, the United States and their allies are considering a coordinated military response after accusing the Russia-backed Syrian government of being behind the attack. Damascus and Moscow have denied a chemical attack took place.

The Aquitaine is equipped with 16 cruise missiles and 16 surface-to-air missiles. It is currently operating off Lebanese shores alongside U.S. ships as part of France's contingent fighting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.

'The flight took place several days ago,' a French naval source said, adding that France had contacted Russian authorities over the matter.

'Passes by military aircraft over warships are things that happen at sea. When it is deemed too close, the opposing party is notified,' the source said.

The Russian air force has already carried out such 'aggressive' flights over Western warships in the past.

“France and America had a good cooperation in the military intervention in Libya civil war.”

That sure led to wonderful results...

Oh you do have kids. That just means you are clueless about the consequences of Russia sinking a French “boat.” Ugh.

“Really? You think sinking a nuclear power’s “boat” would to anything but guarantee WWIII will happen soon? Are you daft? Hope you don’t have kids because they would end up living in a nightmare.”

During the Cold War we didn’t run around BOMBING Soviet allies where they had bases because we simply DID NOT KNOW how it would end.

As I said, if the French launch their missiles, hopefully it just ends with the Russians sinking their boat and teaching them a GOOD LESSON about attacking other countries for sport.

With what? A few jets at 30,000 feet.

If Russia sinks a French boat while defending their ally, it will be JUSTIFIED. If Russia sinks it without provocation, I’d have a problem with that.

Its not just the right its also the left as well for under Obama they hit Libya and got us involved in Syria which is funny for the hated Bush for $hit like that and they kept silent about it too which is one of reasons back then I quit being apart of the democrats and while FR got me out of my leftist mentality, if war does happen over Syria and most of FR supports it, I think ill be out of here for good.

Note the CLEAR INCREASE in that number once the Neocons got control of the Republican Party.

Understand, but I wouldn’t worry too much about the people at FR. If we wanted war with the Russians, HILLARY was ready to start it on Day 1.

Nope, other than a bunch of savants who think they can predict and control the direction of a war against the largest nuclear power in world, the VAST MAJORITY of people here who voted for Trump voted for him precisely to KEEP US OUT of unnecessary wars.

Don’t let their war-mongering tone get to you...there’s very few of them here.

Aww, Poor Frenchies,

Make threats to someone who is as well armed as you are, and with a much bigger, better armed friend, you are lucky if all you get is ‘aggressively buzzed’

Its about time for another world war

A world war with what?

Russia can't even win their conflict with Ukraine and they've been stalemated in Syria.

It's not 1977 anymore, the Russians have a fraction of their Cold War leftovers from the Soviet Union.

Tell me about it. We get so cocky beating up on third world countries for sport, we forget that it’s not so easy to do the same against a country that has FULLY MODERNIZED their weapons for 25 years while we sat on our butts enjoying the ‘peace dividend’ and claiming ‘the end of history’.

While I feel bad for the French sailors who are about to used as cannon fodder by their child-president, I do hope it ends with that, and I suspect that it will.

Russia didn’t have much trouble in Crimea. As to Western Ukraine, not much coming out from there these days...so I don’t know who’s winning, or even if they’re fighting much. As to Syria, have you picked up a newspaper in the past 6 months?

Yep, and Yep.
But you are a lot more optimistic than I am that it will be limited to that..

I think between their S-400 and other capabilities, the Russians will give the West a BLACK EYE, and we’ll run from the theater...one of the reasons I’d rather not fight until we have some decent countermeasures.

But God only help our side if we kill a bunch of Russians on the ground for sport (which I guess is what some here want), then they may hit back very hard - and you may be right.

Russia fully modernizing their hardware?

They haven't built a new TU-22 Backfire since the Cold War. Or Tu-160 Blackjack.

They haven't started a new hull larger than a frigate since the Cold War.

They built 500 Backfires. How many B-2s did we build?
