Tears were shed in the closed-door Republican meeting Wednesday morning when House Speaker Paul Ryan formally announced his retirement. The sorrow spilled into the marble halls of the Capitol, giving the building the air of a funeral parlor throughout the day, but critics say that had more to do with the rotting corpse that is the contemporary GOP than with Ryans early departure.
Still, most Republicans followed Ryans lead and tried to put on a happy face, arguing that his retirement had to do with his desire to spend time with his kids, not the dire odds facing the GOP this fall.
I really do not believe whether I stay or go in 2019 is going to affect a persons individual race for Congress, Ryan told reporters at a press conference overflowing with reporters. Im grateful that we have unified government, that the president with his victory gave us, so we got all these big things done. Were going to have a great record to run on. We have a great economy. Great accomplishments.
Ryans record since taking the speakers gavel is largely the same as Trumps, which means hes ushered through a sweeping tax reform proposal, rolled back a slate of Obama-era regulations, and unwound the Affordable Care Acts individual mandate. Thats why many Republicans had anticipated Ryans retirement.
Being speaker in this environment, with the dynamic in the Congress the way that they are, theres a tremendous amount of wear and tear, right? So, how long do you do it and what are your objectives? retiring Rep. Ryan Costello (R-PA) told The Daily Beast.

Which part is bullshit?
I believe the Republican base turnout will be down 25%.
And Dim turnout will be up 2%.
I would support ANYONE, AN-Y-ONE but kevin mc carthy as his replacement, ANYONE. mc carthy is a rino and a worthless waste of skin, he wants to be president and this is his next step, he can not be allowed to become speaker, he is PRO AMNESTY, doesn’t support the wall and is anti trump despite whatever you hear him say on tv, DO NOT TRUST HIM!!!!!!!
He’s no different then Ryan.
Glad to see these loser poltroons heading for the exit.
I recall Ryan saying a long time ago that he really wanted to return home to raise spend more time with his kids, reiterated it late last year when the tax bill was making progress as that was what he has spent his career to get through. The media is trying to make this a sign of impending Republican doom when it was expected by anyone who paid attention to what Ryan was saying.
The Omnibus was clearly a disaster - but the Republicans can and should start using the rescission process to carve back many of the excesses. If they fail to even try when Trump starts proposing rescissions then they probably will lose. If they succeed at rescinding some of the spending they put spending back on the front burner, point to the success at getting the military what it needed, and can show that they can make the system work to correct excess spending - and will motivate the base to vote.
They shoulda got on the Trump Train when they had the chance.
The mirror on the wall will fix the blame.
Scalise is much better than people think.
The Establishment has had trouble keeping his conservatism in check.
Of course he’s no Dave Brat.
Grown men crying over a buddy going home millions richer than when he got there shows just how corrupt this fraternity is.
In political terms, November 6 is an eternity from now, and events are not static. Buckle your chin strap and stop believing the recycled 2016 spin.
Thanks for nothing, Paul Ryan. That Billion Dollar Budget-Bomb was a gift to the Dems, and will be discussed for years to come as an example of what the GOP does when in power.
The GOP being the party of the Cheap Labor Express had to end.
Both parties can’t represent the illegal aliens.
Somebody has to represent the citizens.
That’s what the new GOP will become.
How can the CommieCrats go wrong ? With the 2 AssClowns running the party??
What a baby. Nancy Pelosi did that job for four years. How hard can it be?
And I believe for every drop of rain that falls...a flower grows. And I believe that a whole lot more than you. Republicans will turn out bigly to send Trump reinforcements.
McCarthy is GOP scum.
I'm not sure there are a half dozen of them I would trust, but I'd trust any of them before McCarthy.
McCain screwed them badly with his no vote on Obamacare semi repeal
Tears were shed in the closed-door Republican meeting...
This part I consider BS. I’d like to hear from the real republican house members.
