Senate Republican leaders warn Trump, but reject calls to pass legislation to protect Mueller

Senate Republican leaders sharply warned President Trump not to fire Robert S. Mueller III on Tuesday — but they once again stopped short of embracing legislation to protect the special counsel.

“I haven’t seen clear indication yet that we needed to pass something to keep him from being removed, because I don’t think that’s going to happen,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). McConnell did not elaborate on why he believed that.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), his top deputy, said he also didn’t believe Mueller would be removed. Asked why, he replied, “I think the consequences of doing so are some that not even the president can anticipate. And I think it would be a mistake.”

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) issued Trump a sharper warning. He said on Fox Business Network it would be “suicide for the president to want, to talk about firing Mueller.”

“I think we’ve got a compromise,” said Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), who proposed one of the bills last year. “But I’m not worried about Mueller being fired.”

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who co-sponsored the other bill, said he supported bringing up legislation in the Judiciary Committee. But he did not embrace the urgency of his Democratic colleagues.

The FBI raid of Cohen’s office was part of an investigation referred by Mueller to federal prosecutors in New York. Mueller has been conducting an expanding investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. At the Justice Department, it is the responsibility of Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein to decide whether to expand Mueller’s mandate to include a new topic or to refer it to a U.S. attorney’s office.

“He’d have to fire Rosenstein first,” said Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the chairman of the Intelligence Committee. “I’m not worried.”

Our President and Commander-in-Chief is under brutal attack by an out-of-control Special Counsel and all the pathetic GOP says is, "whatever you do, don't fire the fascist prosecutor".

Spit.

Make sure to call these “men” if you’re from their state and let them know what you think

Has any GOPer outside of Rand Paul commented on the egregious behavior of raiding the Presidents personal lawyers? Silence. Is there nothing that Mueller can do wrong that would draw their ire?

The Congress can preserve an Executive branch prosecutor? I think not.

First of all, this is the WaPo, so what they write may not be true.

Why the Washington Post Has No Credibility

Second, the Democrats/Deep State have overplayed their hand. A lot of grass-roots support is building for Trump to fire Rosenstein and Mueller. It will take some time until the snakes in the Senate sense this.

Compared to Trump, there is no fire in the belly of anyone on our side.

McConnell looks like he’s drifting and out of consciousness, and Ryan acts more like someone’s caddy than the Speaker of the House.

Well, we’re 175 yards out. What do you recommend we use here Paul? Well, a sand wedge should do. Next shot. We’re in the sand here 125 yards out. What do you recommend. Well, a sand wedge should do. We’re on the green about 7 feet from the cup. How about now? Well, a sand wedge should do.

These guys are stalling until the Democrats take over. Then they’ll ask for big donations and make promises about what they’ll accomplish when we get the majority again.

I’ve never seen a party sell out it’s rank and file like the Republican party today is

Congress could pass a bill, but I doubt if Trump would sign it.

1. It’s apparent to me the GOP elected are offering these warnings, not because they believe it will result in Impeachment and Conviction, but because it will force these Senators to choose between the people who elect them...and the Deep State.

3. Trump is no more impeachable than Obama was. He has tooo much voter support, including at least 35% of the electorate that will support him no matter what.

3. A better approach to consider is the wholesale issue of pardons. Everyone charge by Mueller gets a pardon the next day. Without advance notice or declaration.

Only the US Congress could challenge that. Exclusively.

POTUS retains the sole power constitutionally to pardon. It is unchallenged.

Trump should fire Mueller. Any member of the GOP in the House or Senate who votes for impeachment is kissing his political career (and perhaps more) goodbye

And that 35% will end the career of any GOP pol who votes for impeachment.

Mueller and Rosenstein (and probably Sessions) are all protected by the RINOs in Congress. Their argument is to call the firing of any of the three, obstruction. The implied thread is impeachment and removal.

Would they have enough votes to impeach and to remove? I don't know.

Is there anybody here who is still asking the question, why hasn't Trump fired Mueller, Rosenstein or Sessions?

This is so stupid. Congress cannot legislate away the President’s constitutional powers.

Isn’t it amazing. These beltway sewer rats spend far more time defending Mueller’s treasonous assaults than a POTUS of their own party. This won’t end well for the GOPe. Guaranteed.
