Should Congress Impose Direct Rule over Puerto Rico?
americanthinker.com ^ | 4/10/2018 | Ojel L. Rodriguez

For the past few weeks, Puerto Rico has been subjected to a multitude of actions by our political class and the oversight board related to the handling of our current debt and fiscal crisis that would make left-wingers such as Nicolás Maduro proud. The actions being undertaken are a response to the current policy clash between the government of Ricardo Rossello and the Fiscal and Oversight Management Board about the host of fiscal plans to be adopted by the commonwealth. As the island heads to its next fiscal year, and the island is still recovering from the disaster of Hurricane Maria, the actions undertaken raise an important question. Does the obvious problem in governance in the commonwealth require an extreme action like repealing Law 600 and Congress imposing direct rule?

Sell it back to Spain, or whoever the highest bidder is.
Use money to pay off national debt.

I agree, Puerto Rico should be an independent nation.

I agree, Puerto Rico should be an independent nation.

They'll be nobody left on the island, they'd all flee to the US before it gains independence.

What would anyone have against PR to even want to propose Congress take control?

Puerto Rico should be pried loose from the federal nipple, and cast out to sea on its own. Let them sink or swim as an independent nation - but , either way, they gotta go. We don’t need these Caribbean leeches sucking us dry.

We do not need another commie run near our Florida coast. Put the 82nd Airborne and a brigade of engineers at Base Ramey. Dismiss unnecessary govt employees and let the Army run the island as supervisors and the engineers over see construction.

Get rid of them. Let them go. If they will not leave, cut them loose. We should have done it a long time ago.!

"I agree, Puerto Rico should be an independent nation."

Agreed. PR doesn't add to our country, it's a net loss.

Additionally, we don't need to further balkanise our country.

I agree. Pay off their debts; we are after all a generous nation; but cut PR loose. Now, those residents who are alive at the time of independence can chose US or PR citizenship. But after that date, any born on the island is a citizen of PR.

“Hmmm. Maybe not popular but........cut ‘em loose. “

That would be one way to turn Florida into a Solid Blue State in less than a week as 95% of Puerto Ricans would leave the island.

Believe it or not, I lean towards Yes, we should assume direct control.

Like it or not, better or worse, they are a territory of ours. We can’t cut them loose and say “Adios”.

The problem lies in asking Congress to take over the affairs of the territory. Congress right now seems incapable of taking care of the affairs of the current 50 states. I can’t picture them doing the right thing fiscally for Puerto Rico.

The only alternative (and I don’t know if it’s feasible) is to assume direct control for a very specific period (example 5 years) do our utmost to get the islands fiscal affairs in order and then offer them two choices: statehood or independence. Continued territorial status is no longer an option.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want PR to be our 51st state. I’d prefer they went away - far away. But if they choose statehood, we need to treat their petition like any other territory that applied for statehood.
