Gowdy: Trump should let Mueller interview him
The Hill ^ | April 4, 2018 | John Bowden

South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy (R) urged President Trump to interview with special counsel Robert Mueller in order to help wrap up the Russia probe on Wednesday, arguing the president is "uniquely" qualified to answer many of Mueller's questions.

In an interview with CNN, the chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee argued that speaking with Mueller is not "risky" for Trump if he has nothing to hide.

"Only he knows what he knows. So I would tell you, if you did not rob a bank there is no reason for you not to sit down and talk with the FBI about the bank robbery," Gowdy said.

"If you have nothing to hide, sit down. Assuming a fair prosecutor, and I think Mueller is, sit down and tell him what you know," Gowdy added. "I think he is uniquely well-positioned to answer some of the questions that not just the special counsel but the American people have."

Gowdy's remarks come after a Washington Post report Tuesday night revealed that Trump was not the "target" of Mueller's investigation but rather the "subject," a distinction that Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, said is "meaningless" to him but means a great deal more to the FBI.

"I don't think those terms, target versus subject...the only word that matters to me in the criminal justice system is defendant," Gowdy said. "So if you're not the defendant, whether you're the target or the subject, I know the FBI gets really caught up in those two words, [but] as a former federal prosecutor they're meaningless to me."

I used to like Gowdy, but his praise of Mueller has made me skeptical of him. He knows that an innocent person, particularly the President, could be tripped up on a process crime. He honestly thinks Mueller is nonpartisan and has no desire to bring down Trump? He sees the disproportionate number of liberals on team - people like Weissman, Strozk (who was actively involved in both the Clinton and Russia investigation before being quietly dismissed), sees that Mueller has ignored the FISA abuse, and sees Mueller doesn't care that his pal Comey leaked to get him, etc. He thinks he's fully objective? Gowdy has been emphatically against Mueller being fired and has been very supportive of him.

As far as this:

Mueller's revelation to Trump that he is not currently a criminal target has reportedly made the president more willing to interview with the special counsel's office, an idea Trump's former lawyer John Dowd advised against before he resigned last month.

This is a trap. Trump should not sit down with him. Mueller is trying to get Trump's trust by saying that he's not a criminal target, but he's still a subject of investigation.

""If you have nothing to hide, sit down. Assuming a fair prosecutor, and I think Mueller is, sit down and tell him what you know," Gowdy added"

Gowdy apparently downed his dose of Kool-Aid today.

Gowdy needs to hold his breath until the CO2 buildup makes him experience reality.

Gowdy never accomplished a lick in his uneventful pursuit of the liar, Hillary, and her shameful handling of Benghazi. He should keep his advice to himself because he lost any claim to legal expertise.

Trump (and everybody else) needs to realize that if you talk to a prosecutor or the police their intention is to gather evidence against you for later use.

Trey Gowdy lost me FOREVER when he got on TV and said (to Trump) “If you’re innocent, act like it”

How, by submitting to a never-ending anal probe??????

That ‘proves’ you’re innocent? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......

Do I really have to repeat the old saw about “assume”?

To heck with it - “Assume” an “Ass out of you and me”.

Based on ALL the material that has been uncovered to date why does Gowdy think ANY lawyer associated with Mueller’s special persecutor office is fair. How many of the people committing felonies are also lawyers?

I am trying to figure out what Gowdy’s game is. He is not seeking reelection, he just co-authored a book and he seems to be a Mueller supporter. He must have an end game objective, but as of now, he hasn’t played his hand. Stay tuned.

I used to like Gowdy, too. Now I just want him to STHU. And there is NO WAY Trump should even give Mueller the time of day. Ever.
