It could have also been a case of not being fully alert. Falling asleep at the wheel is a likely possibility if a night crash. A stroke is another possibility. All we know is that the car wasn’t braking when it went off the edge.

It could have been front wheel drive, but the same principle would apply whether it was front or rear wheel drive.

Back in the 80s and 90s, I was a prosecutor. I handled several cases involving crashes. Back then, when crash investigators talked of the speedometer “pinning,” what they looked at was the small mark the needle on the mechanical speedometer made on the face of the speedometer at impact. If the impact force is sufficient, the needle will make a small mark on the face of the speedometer on impact. I assume that is still the case on mechanical speedometers.

If you have rear wheel drive vehicle, you jack it up in the air, put it in drive and floor it, the speedometer will indicate a HIGH SPEED, but how fast is the vehicle moving ?
If you are stuck in the snow, and you floor it, what does your speedometer indicate , yet you are not moving at all ?

They were driving a 2003 Yukon. GM vehicles since 1996 have an EDR, like an airplanes black box, that records vehicle data for the last seconds before a crash. The police have more information than is being released.
If it was electronic, then the 90mph reading was obtained from the car computer. If not it is possible, but highly unlikely, that the mechanical speedometer was 'pinned' (meaning physically jammed by the crash) at the 90mph reading.

It wasn’t PEGGED at 90mph, it was PINNED at 90mph. The word PINNED means INDICATED SPEED. It was likely taken from the car computer which showed the LAST INDICATED SPEED.

That would be mostly dependent on the height of the cliff. The standard formula would be 32 feet per second/per second.
The vehicle's SPEED prior to leaving the cliff edge would only determine how far OUT over the cliff it would go.
