Based on his getting shot six times in the back. It was a pretty logical conclusion.
There is video. He was not only facing them he was moving toward them, after having immediately prior run from them.
It's hard to make out anything on the officers' video. The chopper video is also unclear. It looks to me like the police came around the building, he turned towards them, and they shot him.
Based on what I can make out, he may not have been turned away from them, but "moving towards them" isn't exactly accurate either. It looks more like he was trying to get into the house and then turned -- either because he heard a noise or because he was shot.

I agree he was probably planning to go in the sliding glass door, which us why after retreating from the cops he moved back toward them.
