Trump:

"As a matter of National Security I've signed the Omnibus Spending Bill. I say to Congress: I will NEVER sign another bill like this again. To prevent this omnibus situation from ever happening again, I'm calling on Congress to give me a line-item veto for all govt spending bills!"

I thought the Supreme Court already found this unconstitutional.

I’ll take his word for it. Consider the alternative. You think Rubio will fight for you?

He’s not getting a line item veto, so he better threaten them with his existing veto power.

Of course that would require accountability from the swamp-dwelling slimy creatures, known collectively as Ryanosi McSchumer, so probably will never happen. Nonetheless, POTUS is serving notice: the swamp will be drained.

Congress will never give any president the power of line item veto authority.

Arnold called for a special election after he was elected. 5 conservative propositions conservatives didn’t show up. If we can’t come through for Trump we’ll have no business being in business.

When you threaten to do something, you have to follow through.

He didn't.

Why ask Congress for anything? Simply line out the stuff you don’t like and send it back to them. Direct them to stop needlessly spending American taxpayer dollars on crap like a study on how Japanese birds are affected by Cocaine, and tell them to do the job America is paying them to do!

The key to that phrase from Trump was ‘National Security’, it went with letter he sent Ryan and McConnell the night before he signed it. Trump can use money in this bill, as he sees fit for ‘PURPOSES OF NATIONAL SECURITY, LIKE BUILD A WALL!’

This is not a budget, it’s a bill covered by 1985 Emergency deficit Act...used by Reagan. Used by Obama several times to use money as he saw fit...that money Obama took is gone bye-bye. The VETO was to get peoples attention, and then he brought up DACA and told the DACAS the Dems didn’t care..lol Theatre!

Like a good business man, he paid people to read it and provide input. His time is too valuable to do otherwise.

They can do it internally and not as a power of the potus.

Before the final vote, they can have a house/senate rule that takes it to the White House for his cuts.

It’ll never happen, but they could do it that way.

The line-item veto as a matter of law (i.e., as a mandate for Congress) was determined to be unconstitutional, but maybe that wouldn't prevent Congress from passing an omnibus bill like this and including specific provisions that allows the president the discretion to veto specific items.

Heck -- the easiest way around this problem is to have Congress stop passing these stupid omnibus bills in the first place.

Yep, in a case 22 years ago. The rationale, which I buy into, is that the Constitution does not allow the executive branch to edit laws passed by the legislative branch. Otherwise, there is no separation of powers.

There was no multi-dimensional Chess here. Two weeks or so before vacation and the deadline, he should’ve announced that he was not signing anything there was no time to read. I’m not at all comfortable with what happened. Is that money being spent is going to programs instead of deep-pocket corporate contractors? If he does indeed start the wall and ignore any judges that try to stop him from defending our border, I’ll be somewhat less unhappy about the whole procedure.

How about smaller bills?
One issue per bill, no more mixing candy and poison in massive mega-bills.
